Thinking a random survey might be appropriate for the man of tests, measurements and research, we stopped four gentlemen in the hall of the Administra- tion Building. One of the men was white, one was black. one was Jewish and the fourth was an American Indian 7 now that's random. We asked what they thought of Dr. Crawford J. Mims, and they answered in turn: He's a real nice guy. A beautiful Cal, man. A mensch he is already. But the Indian said, Ughl Not even Dr. Mims wins 'em alll Still he wins as many as he does by listening with feeling to students and faculty: by always arguing ideas, never personalitiesg by doing more jobs than most of us do and complaining less for not at alljg by doing it well. He was such a good teacher, we hated to see him leave the class- room and hope he will be back, yet, he's an obvious choice for more administrative responsibility. Why? Because only a person of character could act as a buff- er between students and faculty, faculty and administration and still keep his friends on all sides, but Dr. Mims continues to accomplish the feat. How? By deep caring and controlled reason no matter how emotionally charged or irrational the situation. Oh yes. and he never remembers an affront - how many of us can say that? . . . . a moe guy . . . a beautiful cat . . . a mensch . . . HOW! Jay Wentworth '3 Q
