SUPERINTENDENT JOHN F. HAYWARD SUPERINTINDENT'S MESSAGE The most significant change that'has taken place in the Petersburg High School program in the last decade is the realization of the importance of education on the part of the boys. In 1954 while there were a few more boys than girls in attendance, only 6 boys were on the Honor Roll compared with 12 girls. At the semester mark in 1964, 23 boys and 20 girls earned the high grades necessary for placement on the Honor Roll. In the old days scholarship was held in low repute by the boys of P. H. S. An honor student was considered an oddball, an egghead, a square. Today the attitude is completely reversed. The young men on the Honor Roll are the leaders. For the first time in history the Viking Coach has no eligibility problems--7 out of 10 of the Vikings are honor students. The complex economy of today and tomorrow demands and rewards men and women with self-discipline, courage and a high level of education. The boys of 1964 have no more brains than the boys of 1954, 1944, or 1934, but they have learned that intellectual achievment is the status symbol of the 60's
