PRINCIPAL Arthur W. Eshelman l I I .79 ai 4. Members of the Class of '59 - - Someone has said, Youth is the time of blossoms and blue skies and laugh- ing waters. Yours is a generation that has a greater challenge to face than any that has ever preceded it. You will be called upon to help carry the torch of democracy forward. It is incumbent upon you to maintain the humane spirit, to grow in sympathy, in humility and at the same time in understanding, in courage and in devotion to the public good. In this task you will meet much competition which you must overcome through the sweat of your labors and the strength of your dreams before you can make your heritage secure for your generation. Yours is a great responsibility. Weigh it well. This is not a hopeless world. Remember this great country depends on you and others of your gen- eration to supply what we have failed to give it. You somehow must have the power and, we hope, the will to fill the need. You will have the opportunity to serve. You could not ask for more of life. Within your generation many of the political, social and economic formu- las must be revised. They must be brought into a more intelligent and workable relationship with the changed circumstances of this age of the Power of the Atom. This revision will bring about a demand for a new kind of statesman. Statesmen of character, honesty and dependability - - a statesmanship which demonstrates the truth of the proverb, Righteousness exhalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. H The hope of the world lies in our youth - - thinking, sincere, dedicated, educated, courageous youth. Look into the future with a spirit of high adventure, with a breath of vision that pushes you ahead, with a creative spirit that opens unlocked doors d ' h ' . an wit a courage that comes from a great faith and your gen- eration cannot fail. b It isn't an easy road ahead, nor a simple task to overcome. It has never een that for any generation of Americans. But we believe with your convictions and determi ' . nations you are ready to start on the most difficult and demanding life ahead. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Harry V. Pownall 0 0 9 Strong bodies and special skills are not enough to produce champions. No, not even will power and determination will do this. It is important to think right , and be in harmony with the universe. Those who achieve the greatest accomplishments are in time with the master plan of life, functioning like a well synchronized mechanism. The traits of character which give us individuality also make an impression upon the lives of our fellows and, therefore, give us a place in their lives. The members of your class have manifested themselves to one another and have thus given a meaning to their lives which is worthy of record in the Pequoian. Therefore, the Pequoian is a record and an interpretation of yourselves through your activities while in our school.
