As time separates us from the days spent at Palmer Memorial Institute, we will often refer to people and incidents of our high school years. Mr. Willis Siler Mr. Earnest Fuller Mr. Albert Gray I3 A Message From The President TIME A dozen years at Palmer is a long time especially if you came down to spend only one year! During these twelve years I have had many memorable good times with boys and girls who loved Palmer and its ideals. I have seen eleven senior classes march to the rostrum at graduation with bright eyes and eager minds, to go to various colleges to spread good tidings, I have seen others with only one thing on their minds-time for a diploma-time to exit from the campus, I have seen others with tears in their eyes for the intelle ctual, recreational, and spiritual acumen they had received from their teachers and founder. What will I see when you march through the sacred Halls of Palmer? Have you heard the slogan The flight of time is urged on by the spur of the moment ? Your directors in the dormitory and dining room, your teachers and adminis- trators have all tried to imp r e s s upon you the above proverb, for we wish you to gain a seriousness of purpose in your lives and to develop the value of time. We have plenty of records of the remorse felt by those who spent their time without purpose. Read what Samuel T. Coleridge, the English poet wrote to his son about time, what Lord Byron, brilliant genius of English literature wrote about Time in his diary, and what Arnold Bennett, author, said in his essay, How to live in Twenty-four Hours a Day . If we have real u nd e r standing of the value of time, we shall want to be sure to earn our living in a way that is honorable, if we have a real understanding of the value of time we shall have a time to worship, a time for leisure and recreation, and a time for human relations. Henry Van Dyke said this about time: Time is, Too Slow for those who Wait, Too Swift for those who fear, Too Long for those who Grieve, Too Short for those who Rejoice, But for those who love, Time is Eternity. Let us hope that as you leave the sacred Halls of Palmer, you will remember that time will always be on your Life's agenda. How will you value its vicissitudes? Will you say- to quote Rev. J. G. Corry of Greensboro, N. The love of Palmer has made us see That life is not all bright, There's good and bad in all of us, There's also wrong and right. Our love for you has taken us Through many days of strife. Because in all our trials, You are ever in our sight. We can n'er forget the faith That you have had in us. Our goal in life is just to keep Your faith, your hope, your trust. These portals, though we leave behind, Will be with us forever. With God and Palmer in our hearts, We'll always be together. Through the Sacred Halls of Palmer, Every voice will bid farewell. Our hearts will linger with you, In these halls our spirit shall dwell. Dorothy Marie Frazier VAX 9 ll x .t ll ffhiff W HALLS OF PALMER CTune: Halls of Ivyj Oh, we love the halls of Palmer, That surround us here today. And we will ne'er forget, Though we be far, far, away. In the sacred halls of Palmer, All our voices bid farewell. And shimmer off in twilight, Like the old vesper bell. Chorus: One day a hush will fall, The footsteps of us all, Will echo down the hall, and disappear. But as we sadly start, our journeys far A part of every heart will linger here. In the sacred halls of Palmer, Where we've lived and learned to know. Clashing ideologies, new inventions and discoveries, and changing concepts of social living have brought the world closer together. No longer can we ignore the conflicts of other peoples. It is encouraged most of all by our president, Miss Crosson, who fond- ly recalls her days on the Hardwood. From early autumn until late spring the gymnasium resounds with the bounc- ing of a bas ketball . This is the one sport that is played all year. The Palmer Pirates have earned for themselves the reputation of being a conscientious team, coached by a conscientious man. The Pirates this year have been playing c r editable basketball. The record this season thus far CFebruary 155 stands at 11 wins and 3 losses. The new mem- bers of the squad have shown great promise and next year we expect the Pirates to continue as a winning team. The roster is as follows: First Five Chester McCollough Forward Timmonsville, S. Alvin Adams Forward Baltimore, Md, Gussie Smith Center Dayton, Ohio Carlton Quiller Guard Scranton, Pa. William Shepard Guard New York, N.Y. Second Five Ronald Pogue Forward Cleveland, Ohio Charlie Humphries Forward Dawson, Ga. Theodore Wilson Center New York, N.Y. Clifford Ashmore Guard Atlanta, Ga. Charles Pope Guard New York, N. Y. Reserves Harold Jones Forward Tallahassee, Fla Madison Lee Forward West Point, Ga. The graduating members of the basketball team say to all of you, Keep up the good work . There are vacant spots to fill. Players like Shepard, Smith, Adams, McCollough, Pope, Wilson and Ashmore have been the backbone of the 1960-61 edition of the Pirates. The real backbone is a man who loses when the team loses, and wins when the team wins, works faithfully, and often single-handedly holds up the team. He is our coach, a man who always has the respect of his players- Mr. Bundrige.
