MANGUM As we, the graduating class of 1957, marched down the aisles, we were accompanied by many pleasant memories of the past years, and particularly of the last few months, March had in store many memorable days for us - the Senior Play, Skip Day and the planting of our Class Tree. The top notch senior Play, Handy Man, presented March 1, was very well accepted and a real success. Maxine Cook and Perry Hibdon portrayed the leading characters. The Annual Skip Day was March 6, This was one of our best activities, as everyone took part, We had a wonderful day at the Sulphur Works, near Mineral, skiing and tobogganing. We spent the evening at Enos's, dancing, The Seniors planted a Redwood tree in Vinsonhaler Park. This is an annual practice for each graduating class. We donated 315, 00 to CARE to help those not as fortunate as we. The Senior Ball was held May 3. The theme was Young Love. This was the big formal dance of the year and was well attended and really enjoyed by students and alumni. Commissioner, P, Murphy, Vice President, Vice President, B. BR Three down, and one to go! This Junior year has really been great, We started it by winning second prize on our float in the Glenn County Fair Parade. Our first class project for points toward the Principal's Trophy was cleaning up the bleachers and concession stands for the beginning of football season. We sold popcorn at the football games and were quite successful at it. Just before Christmas, we sponsored the Junior Prom. The theme was Frosty, the Snowman, and Frosty was there in person. Miss Gakey's stage crew helped our committee construct the frame for our giant Frosty - 12 feet tall and 7 feet around at the base. We placed the frame in Memorial Hall and stuffed it with white paper napkins, We used black crepe paper for eyes and mouth, a carrot for a nose, and a can on a stick for a pipe. We gave him red gloves and a red scarf and crowned him with a black top hat, and he was ready to reign over the dance! Frosty enjoyed himself as much as everyone else and did not melt and run away. He looked so sad when all the fun was over, but not half as sad as the Juniors who had to take him apart. Another class project was putting new numbers on the room doors. This was a big help to new students and visitors. From our ranks Joan Wallace and Gary Freeman were chosen to attend Girls' and Boys' States. In March, when the intramural track meet was held, the Junior boys carried away' first prize. Were we proud! Our last gesture of the year was decorating for the Seniors' graduating exercises. This was our way of saying, good -by and good luck, D, Pehrson, Commissioner: I. Graves, J, Wallace, Secretary-Treasurer: M. Secretary-Treasurerg L, Howard, Vice Ogburn, Vice President: I. This en- riched our treasury by 360, 00, We gave the Freshmen Reception Dance, which everyone seemed to enjoy, We hope our honored guests, the Freshmen, enjoyed it. At the annual Halloween Mardi Gras, a sophomore, Katherine Berkland was crowned Queen, Then, very eagerly, we started work on our projects, We painted the benches for the basketball players, which gave us 50 points toward the highly honored Principal's Trophy. We also cleaned up the campus, and painted the hurdles. We wish to thank the Freshmen for the return dance they gave us. lt was swell! The next thing we knew, we were choosing our class rings. This we really enjoyed. Super Sabre won, hands downg either with or without stones. The Sophomore program consisted of special talent and a one-act play, We were very pleased during the second quarter, to have the top number of students on the honor roll, with as many boys on the honor roll as girls. WE gave 810. 00 to the March of Dimes and 310, 00 to the Hungarian Relief Fund, We especially want to thank our advisors - Miss Hanbury, Miss Guilford, Mr, Gein, Mr, Webb, and Mr, Whitsett - for the help they have given us in making our Sophomore year such a big success. YW' RICO What a way to start our O, H,S, career! Under the guidance of the Student Council, we succeeded in looking like perfect fools during our initiation, But we did clean up the grounds, even though we didn't sweeten the air with the onions we had to wear around our necks, Thanks to the Sophomore Class for the Freshman Reception. It made us feelithat we really belonged here! We hope everyone enjoyed our Frosh Return Dance. We called it The Sugar Plum Dance and decorated in various shades of pink, To raise money for our treasury, we sponsored cake sales and sold candy and gum at the football games. We added something new this year - The Men Teachers' Cake Baking Contest, Everyone enjoyed tasting the different cakes. Later we put on our Freshman Class assembly, Who Did It! , for the Student Body and P,T, A, We really enjoyed this year at O, I-I,S, and are looking forward to more fun in our next years, D. Five girls were nominated by the Varsity squad for Football Queen: Roberta Rodriquez, Sarah White, Patti Hibdon, Kay Sweet and JoAnn Graves. Bert Rodriquez was elected by the Student Body to reign over the dance and game, Three Play Days were held for girls' sports: soccer in December, basketball in January, and volleyball in March, In the soccer tournament, which was very hard -fought, there was a three -way tie between Junior II, Senior II and Junior III groups. In basketball and volleyball, Senior teams were victorious. We were scheduled to give the Annual G,A,A, Sock Hop in February, but this year we changed the theme to Headdress Hop. All sorts of crazy hats were worn, and the kids still danced in their socks, The big money-making project was the Annual Dance Review, titled this year, The Frantic Fifties, Two performances were given - a matinee on Thursday, March 28, for the students, and an evening show on Friday, March 29, In April, the slumber party, which turns out always to be a no-sleep party, was enjoyed by about 60 girls, The evening and morning hours were spent with all sorts of games and activities, including a movie. Initiations were held at various times throughout the year, The usual crazy dresses and get -ups were worn by all the incoming girls. This year has been one of the most active that the G,A,A, has ever had, and the girls really enjoyed it, 'Q uv' 'Tw ' s x,! zf? - W N, .uh 'Wil' P, Caviglia, S, Troxel, P, Hibdon, D, Owen, B.
