'nz ll 0. 4 . .Y .PJ .lc r IUIS. I Starting in October, 1956, Uriskany was molded into a striking new shape, complete with angled deck and streamlined hurricane bow. Steam- driven catapults capable of launching heavier aircraft were installed the combat information center was relocated to a more protected space, and the crew's berthing areas were modernized. In March, 1961, Uriskany became thefirst ship to be installed with the Navy Tactical Data System KNTDSQ. President John F. Kennedy visited the ship to observe the system at work. Tragedy struck Oriskany during her second combat deployment to Vietnam. At 7:28 a.m., Uctober 26, 1966, fire broke out in aforward magazine and raged through five decks. Many of the 43 men who died were combat pilots who hadflown raids over North Vietnam afew hours earlier. During her seventh cruise to Vietnam, CDR Denis R. Weichman made naval aviation history when he flew Oriskany's last combat mission over Vietnam on fanuary 27 1973. That mission was his 612th air mission over Vietnam-more than any other naval aviator. With the departure on Uctober 18, 1973, Oriskany embarked on her 14th deployment to the Western Pacific. It was to be a change ofpacefor the veteran carrier--herfirst peacetime cruise since 1 965.

A HISTCRY USS ORISKANY is named after the Revolutionary War battle fought August 6, 1 771 at Orisleany Creek near Rome, New Yorle. Une hundred and thirty-four years later, on August Z I 943, Congress authorized construction of CV-34. The lzeel was laid May I, I 944, and the ship was launched on Gctober 13, 1945. With the Korean War at hand Orishany was commissioned into service on September 25, I 950. In the 23 years since commissioning, Orishany has made 14 major deployments: one to the Mediterranean and 13 to the Western Pacific. Eight ofthe Pacific deployments were to combat zones: one to Korea and seven to Vietnam. Orishany jets distinguished themselves in Korea when, on November I Z I 952, they engaged in what is believed to be the first multi-jet dogfight in naval history. Four Orishany F- 9F Pantherjets were pitted against seven Communist MIG-I5's. Two MIG 's were destroyed and a third was damaged. No Urishany jets were lost. Between Korea and Vietnam, Urisleany went into the movie business hosting William Holden and Michey Rooney in thefilming of THE BRIDGES AT TOK O-Rl MGM also cast her as the heroine of THE MEN OF THE FIGHTING LADY I
