E. R. NICHOLS Our time is a most treasured possession. Once lost it can never be found and once used it can never be reclaimed. Those things we do in the present determine how we will live in the future. Use your time wisely to enjoy life more abundantly. D l X WILLIE I. GEORGE The time spent in high school can be one of the happiest periods of life, but unfortunately for many it is not. This period is a time of fresh vitality and the availability of many opportunities. The better one is prepared to face the challenge of this time, take advantage of opportunities available, and not be sidetracked by rough spots, pressures, and problems, the better one will realize the best of-life now and in the future. Learning to overcome these problems increases confidence and provides the remarkable experience of helping one become a worth individual. Chickasaw was not only the theme for the 1978 season but was the only supreme goal for 57 varsit gridiron players. Picked to finish as high as second by some polls and third in others the Conquistador were expected to be a contender in the frantic race for the Number 1 spot. Returning from an 8-2 team and CrossRoads Bowl participant were 35 team members that knew howto obtain success on the football field. A For the first time-in several years 2-a-day practices were used to prepare for the tough game schedule With the season beginning earlier than ever before, players had to also prepare in the heat of the Augusi Sun. Supreme effort was given by all. Byhalia, an annual rivalry was first on list as the Quistors smashed the Indians 47-8. The Falcons oi Kingsbury, Memphis AAA contender was second the game in order to prepare for the Chickasaw Confer- ence race. Kingsbury with several outstanding players proved to be a great test for the Conquistadors. The 12-6 win was made possible by a 4th quarter touchdown pass from Paul Williams to Bill Welch. Tradition rich Varnerfield was the site of the Conquistadors first conference win, a 21-10 come-from- behind victory over the Senatobia Warriors. After smashing North Panola, in the homecoming battle 41-6 the Conquistadors gave the fans exciting come-from-behind victories over Coldwater 8-6 and Holly Springs 13-12. Once Again the Wildcats of Independence proved to be too strong for OB as the Cats, before a capacity crowd, knocked the Conquistadors from the unbeaten ranks 0-14. Homecoming Spoilers was the title labeled the football Conquistadors after visiting and defeating arch rival Hernando 41-6 and stingy Southaven 7-3. Once again the Conquistadors downed the Eagles of Horn Lake 17-7 to rule DeSoto County schools. All season's have their high points but the tremendous emotional victory at Southaven had to reach not only the players but our fans and community all agreed it was an outstanding win. Not at all second in emotional highs was the first ever win over the South Panola Tigers 42-16. Fullback Sammy Iones raced for 297 yards as the OB line completed dominated the victory and clinched at least a Co-Championship. Individual honors were also achieved during the successful season. The greatest honor to be obtained by a Conquistador Player is being selected Co-Captain. This year the permanent captains chosen were 4-year starter Paul Williams and three-year letterman Odis Webb. Odis also was honored for his hardwork by receiving a grant-in-aid to Iackson State University. For the first time in conference history, they really showed tremendous progress as the season passed. With a 48 member squad which had pre- viously been winless in middle school participation, Coach Ross developed a 6-3 club. Each squad member participated in the successful season. As fhe season developed the young Conquistadors became outstanding hitters and the tradition of being the hardest hitters in the conference seems to be continuing throughout the program. Hopefully the improvement shown and the desire to be the best will follow these young men into the varsity program where their talents can be displayed even more. uQhd0WnS i rf0m','0 fambxegi Chickasaw na 'IME Branch 1 S or C0nfe n Lake A' Southaven Bt' UPL de deieufi Co- - C h U m D I 0 nxs S M D QYXAOWS' CWS L anghqcgfynasi CY8 055 ' Qflefrio 'X of the Olive Bunch Conquysudon, Dowd contest between Olive Branch and Kingsbury.
