Audiences were carried to the tropics as they enjoyed Okemos’ winning performance of South Pacific. The entire play takes place on two South Pacific islands during WWII. During the play various romances occur between inhabitants of both islands: A French planter, Emile de Becque, falls in love with Ensign Nellie Forbush and Lt. Joseph Cable has a romance with Liat, a native of Bali Ha’i. The latter half of the play deals with war activities, including a spy mission with Emile de Becque and Joe Cable which ends in the tragic death of the Lieutenant. South Pacific also has a humorous side illustrated by the comic native Bloody Mary and Luther Billis’ hilarious Honey Bun dance. The play was a definite success boasting a sellout crowd with a standing ovation closing night.
