'E Q USS O'BRIE Built with future growth in mind, O'BRIEN's design is modular in nuiun- thus allowing for the easy installation of entire subsystems witlnn the ship. This makes O'BRlEN a ship of the future as Well 86 tln- pn-sl-nt. llcr modular construction and the consequent ease with wlnfli slim- can accept thc installation of new weapons and electronics systnim :lf-stincs O'BRll5N to be a proving ground for new military lf-cliriologgy. Vrcw comfort and hahitability were also of prime consideration in O'BRll-ZN's design. Berthing areas are very spacious and C'0l'l5lClf.'l'8l'llf' cars- was taken to equip the ship with featUIOS uncommon to most destroyers. Such features include a ship's library, .arf-wk lounge. a well equipped gymnasium, hobby shop, and many other itc-ms aimf-d at crew comfort.. Enhancing these specifically clf-signed-in comforts is the added benefit of a much reduced required manning le-vc-l resulting from the incorporation of the many automair-cl weapons and engineering systems. P Decommissioned at the end of World War ll. DD-T25 was recommissioned at the onset of the Korean conflict. Her combat experience during this war consisted almost exclusively of shore bombardment in support of United Nations Forces. 0'BRIEN participated in the seige of Songin and was one of three ships involved in the i'Battle of the Buzz-sawn at Wonsan Harbor in July of 1951. After Korea, DD-725 underwent FRANI ll conversion rr-molding her for antisubmarine warfare. Then, in 1965, she entered the Viet Nam conflict. As in Korea, O'Bltll-lN's primary services would be those of providing gunfire support to land troops, in destroying enemy shore installations, and in the interdiction of coastal supply movements. ller greatest service evolved around her efforts in this latter category, U'BltlllN, alone, accounted for the destruction of, or severe daniatge to 2U enemy vessels that were providing supplies to the Viet Vontg. O'BltIEN was fired on a total of six times hy shore lmttt'i'it's during such assigrtmt-nts. At one time she took three direct hits from a shore battery, and, although severely tlarnaeetl, she managed to destroy that same installation. llll-T25 was instru- mental in significantly slowing coastal supply trat'fit-. l'he ship was decommissioned at Long Beach in l-'ehruary ot' 19713. An advanced fire control system pinpoints targets with nearly 10046 accuracy. O'BFtIEN was also designed with the crew in mind. She has spacious berthing areas and other features uncommon to more conventional destroyers including a walk-in ships store, library. gymnasium, and hobby shop. ln conclusion. O'BRlEN is a destroyermans dream. incorporating crew comfort with an unequalled technology to comprise the most practical and Capable destroyer afloat anywhere in the world. SHlP'S CREST As seen at the top left corner, tJ-SS O BFUEN S official crest symbolizes the rich tradition of courage and determination initiated by the SNP S namesake' Captain Jeremiah O'Brien. The shamrock alludes to the Irish ancestry of Jeremiah O'Brien while the crossed nautical tridents and overlapping cannon signify the first naval battle of the American Revolution. The motto, Loyalty - Unity - Freedom is representative of deep beliefs held by our first colonists during their fight for independence from Great Britain. , 'gf gl THE MAKING OF o'BniEN 17 J Preparing a ship of O'BRlEN's size and complexity for commissioning was a monumental task. . fa. , at - ..,i.tfit..t.i.l,n. During Builders Trials ,thls crew came along as guests to get an idea of O'BRlEN's seaworthiness while Ingalls Shipbuilding checkedout all ofthe ship's systems underway. Two weeks after Builder's Trials came Acceptance Trials . On this one- day cruise, the Navy observed all systems on board to ensure their satisfactory functioning before accepting the ship from the contractors. The advanced crew's work really began with detailed inspection of each and every piece of equipment aboard. Following the discrepancyfcorrection period came the onloading of tons of office equipmentand general supplies. Working parties labored many long, hard hours hand-carrying the goods and placing them in appropriate spaces. On 2 November, the advance crew, which had been living in temporary quarters at Lakeside Manor gladly moved their seabags aboard O'BRlEN. Just two days later the remaining bulk of O'BRlEN's crew arrivedfrom San Diego and set about cleaning her up for her commissioning scheduled one month later. Painting. sweeping and swabbing were orders of the day. Also, during this clean-up period the crew was given intensive training on the operation and maintenance of O'BRlEN's sophisticated systems and equipment. All this came in preparation for 3 December's commissioning. JEREMIAH O'BRlEN As ,was mentioned earlier in the description of the ship's official crest, Captain Jeremiah O'Brien is the vessel's namesake. Born at Kittery, Maine in 1744, Jeremiah O'Brien would become Captain of the first American ship to engage and defeat the British in naval conflict during the American Revolutionary War, Little Qf no records exist telling of Captain ' O Brien. but the saga of his victory over the British Warship MARGARET-rA tells of .me mens Courage. and of his dedication to freedom and liberty. Behind the manor we had access to a small lake complete with fishing pier. rowboats, and rumors of alligators, although none of O'Brien's crew ever saw one. So. that was and Still is Lakeside Manor, our home until November 2nd when the crew moved aboard ship. Thank-you Lakeside We appreciate your hospitality! 1f7QfM'f sw?s.6r -4' j3g,,.0 as C! Hundreds of guests viewed the ceremonv from the pier while the United States Ensign was hoisted at the fantail to the moving sounds of our National Anthem. At that moment came the reward of months of hard but satisfying work - our ship, USS O'BRlEN, became truly, the pride of the fleet. CONGRATULATIONS! Even before OBRIEN left her commissioning berth in Pascagoula. Mississippi, preparations were clearly Underway, aimed at readying the ship and her crew for participation in that ultimate training evolution f0'ma Y entitled Shakedown Training , scheduled for the month of February Many hard hours and a C0I'l.Siderable number of calories were spent pouring over. and complying with. pre-training checksheets designed to bring shipboard equipment and personnel to the proper degree of readiness that would allow maximum benefit to be derived from the scheduled training evolution. Once all was deemed to bein readiness. a fresh and eager O'BRlEN entered her y month long Shakedown period. L O'BFtlEN spent most of the month at T - sea. entering port only for weekends and to drop off Training Group observers. Most of those long g I underway hours were spent al' 4 conducting various drills and exercises designed to put OBRIEN in prime fighting condition. This time frame attested to being an excellent proving ground where O'BFtlEN's Officers and men demonstrated uncommon determination and professionalism. Shakedowns end saw O'BFttEN's crew emerge slightly worn, but, most importantly, they also came away with a sense ot comradery a t 3 M . , and pride in accomplishment 2 As Shakedown ended, a new managerial challenge, Final Contract Trials lFCTt, appeared interspersed with many minor and some major evolutions, FCT was the predominant theme around which everyones efforts were concentrated during the next several weeks. Final Contract Trials are aimed at identifying deticiencles throughout the ship, and getting them corrected ata subsequent Post Shakedown Availability iPSAt at Pascagoula before the ship is finally accepted from the building yard bythe Navy ln reality FCT is merely a pseudonym for lNSLJFtV INSURV is an important and very rigorous inspection designed to identity deficiencies that can rflfect the operational capability of a ship. This inspection is conducted by a board composed ot both Naval and civilian experts. The philosophy behind preparing for FCT was one ot documenting or correcting all possible problems before the inspection actually began. O'BRlEN's transit from San Diego to Pascagoula for FCT and Post Shakedown Availability was dedicated to such FCT preparations where. under the experienced leadership of O'BRlEN's Officers and senior Petty Officers. the crew made il concerted effort toward cleaning the ship, and either correcting deficiencies. or writing reports about them Although an immeasurable amount ol time and energy was spent by all hands ln these preparations, the expenditure was punctuated by periods ol relaxation during which crew members whiled away time basking in Sols rays on 'OBRIEN Beach ian 03 level weather deck appropriated for sunbathingt, fishing off the fantail. curling up with a good book, or otherwise involved in such energetic ends. Upon arrival in Pascagoula O'BFtlEN entered FCT, All the efforts expended in preparations earned excellent returns as OBRIEN emerged whole. if somewhat frayed. from the week-long ordeal. All hands really pulled together and made O't3RIEN's FCT one of the smoothest and g y most impressive to date. gli jg FCT was wrapped up on a Friday T V morning. By that afternoon, most of N16 crew could be found delightfully involved ln deciding how they were goingto spend the next three days of a well-earned g vacation. Some men took advantage of the time by visiting relatives in surround- V ing areas. others tramped up and down the banks of the Pascagoula Ftiver intent on snaring a wiley catfish or two, and many more just decided to do nothing at The crew Mans the Rail at O'BRIEN's Commissioning. The following workweek proved almost as taxing as the weekend. After a couple of productive mornings spent cleaning the ship for an upcoming Open House fwhich saw 4.500 Gull Coast residents visit the shipl, most of the crew wearily retreated to the local softball field at Lakeside Manor where various souls, belonging to one or more of O'BRlEN'S ten softball teams. could be found trying to outdo each other at their newfound pastime This first day of many scheduled softball games saw 6 of O'BFtlEN's 10 teams pitted against each other in grueling games The first game of the season was a contest between the Officers and CPO's. To the dismay of the Chiefs they were soundly trounced. 24 to 9. The following week brought the start of Post Shakedown Availability where many of the problems uncovered during FCT were corrected by Ingalls Shipbuilding During the month of Mav. O'BFtlEN's crew will busy themselves with monitoring all shipyard work to ensure its proper completion and, at the same time. will provide fire watches during welding operations and other hot work , as well as continuing with maintenance of the ships equipment The next commitment for the ship is a backlltting period in Long Beach Naval Shipyard where the ship will be outfitted with additional highly sophisticated weapons systems not originally contracted lor by the ship builder. This period is scheduled to begin in early July and extend through Jartuziry of 1979 During the transit from San Diego to Long Bench, the ship will have a Dependents Crtiisr- with busing provided fOr the trip batik to S80 Diego The events scheduled between the end ol PSA and the beginning of the yard period will also offer the crew some well -earned relaxation Among the events the crew is looking forward to are proposed port visits to Rodman CZ and a 3 day stay in Acapulco, Mexico Then it's on to San Diego with an arrival date of late June and sometime to spend with waiting families and friends. OS1 Ronald Thiele has instituted within the ship one of the best career counseling and retention programs in the Fleet. Petty Officer Thiele comes to us well equipped to take on this task. He has held the job ol Career Counselor on USS Truxton where he helped the ship win the Golden Anchor Award for excellencein retention team efforts. Additionally, Petty Officer Thiele has served as Career Counselor with Staffs of COMDESRON FIVE, COMCRUDESPAC, and COMCRUDESGRU THREE, and has also held the position of Race Relations Group Facilitator attached to the Human Resource Management Center at Naval Training Center, San Diego Petty Officer Thiele's assets also include a 3 year tour of duty as a Navy Recruiter working out of Kentwood Michigan, where he amassed numerous recruiting awards including the Golden Reef Award for recruiting excellence. Obviously a man of conviction, OS1 Thiele has also made his talents available tothe communities he has lived and worked in. While stationed in Kentwood he was actively involved in local politics and wasa member of the Kentwood Volunteer Fire Department. On the homefront, Petty Officer Thiele is presently active in local politics as a member of the Pacific Beach Town Council and is a member in good standing with -the U. S. Jaycees. The essence of a Career Counselor's job is one of keeping all ship's perSot'it19l informed of current programs offered by the Navy for retention via counseling and interview sessions. Additionally the Career Counselor must keep the Command informed ofsituations which have either poslllV6 or negative effects on retention efforts and, where practical, make appropriate recommendationsforchange. As O'BRlEN's Career Counselor, Petty Officer Thiele plans to meet and exceed these job requirements. HB feels 'hal NS Dflmafy '95-Donsibility is one of helping the individual Navy man and his family plan theirfutufd by showing them exactly what reenlistment options are available. He wants also to help them undefsland other related programs the Navy has to offer, in terms of such things as additional professional and general educalloflal development. With this philosophy in mind our Career Counselor has taken steps in tht! following areas: ' -- He has identified all O'BRlEN person l nd will msmute a pro ' 1 ne needing to complete a High School GED program 8 r Qram during our stay in Long Beach. - He has taken steps to designate OBRIEN DANT ' ' l t hich will includa various college educational ro as 8' ES testingmducatlona Cen er W H q 1 D' Qrams and the offering of college level entrance tests. From ' Home A Uss OBRIEN PANAMA AND THE CANAL O D ember 1977 the USS OQBRIEN sat anchored in Limon Bay, Cristobal, Republic of Panama awaitingh t n is .Gurney thfough the Panama Canal. We were on our way home following our Pascagoula, Mississipeg cldiinimissioning. This was to be the first of our three transits of the Canal. We would have the opportunity tgpag through the Canal again on April 10, 1978 on our way back to Pascagoula for PSA, and on June, 1978 for the return trip to San Diego. The canal was finished in 1914, after 10 years of labor by the United States at a cost of S387 million. It was constructed to save ships the 7,000 mile journey around South America by providing a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama, It takes a ship nine hours to complete the fifty-one mile transit. As you leave Limon Bay, and enter the canal, you pass through mangrove swamps and lush, tropical forests. The scenery reminds you of old jungle movies, and you half expect to see someone come swinging by in a loincloth.Thg canal widens to 500 feet as you begin the approach to the Gatun Locks. A ship is raised or lowered eighty-five feet in three steps. Water used to fill each lock chamber is gravity fed by letting water run downhill, from Gatun Lake, which provides the water used for filling the locks. The water passes through I8 foot culverts found in the center and sides of the locks. From these, the water flows through smaller culverts which open into the floor of the lock chambers. Each chamber is 110 feet wide and 1000 feet long. While here, we picked up visitors. Military Personnel, and dependant families boarded the O'BRIEN to join us in ,our transit of the canal. Our guests were given a tour of the ship, ate lunch on the messdecks, and walked about the ship, conversing with the crew. water in the world.
