He attends the Sacraments weekly, practices virtue daily, and has a manly piety which exercises itself mainly toward the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady. Catholic Action is prominent in his life, which achieves its greatest good through example, for the Notre Dame man is clean in mind, speech, and action. Intellectual honesty is practised by the Notre Dame man, for his whole life is guided by principle. He strives to penetrate, as far as he can, the Truth that is God, for he recog- nizes the fact that late of God comes from knowledge of Him. All his study is devoted to this seeking after Truth and to a prepara- tion for the niche he is to occupy in life according to the Eternal Plan. Since man is composed of soul and body, the Notre Dame man takes the proper care of his body, for God has given it to him. He keeps his body clean and engages in some sport or exercise to maintain good health and train himself in the qualities of good sports- manship. Socially, the Notre Dame man is always a gentleman. He cultivates genuine friend- ships with good companions. He is a worth- while citizen who strives to promote the common good by serving his God, his coun- try, and his community. In a word, a man of faith and honesty, of strength of character through self-mastery, of respect for the Christian family and law- ful authority, of leadership in the pursuit of good-that is a NOTRE DAME MAN. P Notre Dame High School sits proudly on the heights of West Haven, offering a wide view of the city beneath and the scenic panorama which surrounds it. This physical setting is most appropriate for a school whose function is Catholic education, the opening of new vistas of knowledge through the media of faith and reason. Notre Dame, in its thirteenth year of existence, has ever striven to keep this standard of education. The rea- son for its success lies in its faculty, the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who combine over a century of teaching experience with the freshness and vitality of youthful interests. Through these four years of Notre Dame they have given us of their wisdom and affection in forming us intellectually, in giving us spiritual strength and inspiration. As grad- uates of Notre Dame, we will always be grateful to them for giving us the supports- intellectual and spiritual - upon which our Catholic life depends. H Joseph Quinn, Secretary Kevin Little, Vice Prefidenl Marco Palmieri, Trearurer Russell de Lucia, Prerideni It was in the fall of 1955 that we entered Notre Dame, just kids embarking on a new and awesome adventure, scared and a little lost in a strange new world of one-way corridors, staggering homework assignments, and the ever-present threat of detention. Now, in the spring of 1959, the time has come to leave Notre Dame. It has been a time of growth and change, these years at Notre Dame, and the full measure of this change lies deeper than the inevitable metamorphosis from shy, awkward Freshmen to cocky Sophomores to swaggering juniors to self-confident seniors. More important is the gradual spiritual growth under the guidance of the Brothers of Holy Cross and the inspiration of the Notre Dame Code. The hectic preparations for exams, the excitement of the football games, the soft music and magic glow of the dances, the inspiration of the Brothers and laymen who have taught us-all of these will be vivid memories of our adventure at Notre Dame. In these four years the world has changed, too. Man has finally conquered outer space and a new and vigorous Pope has mounted the throne of Peter. It is another new, exciting world that we graduates now enter, but it is also a troubled world. We place upon this Paten our joys, sorrows, work, crosses, anal all those whom we love. A no comm Moccccxgwzx ,ji was-il HE offering of the Mass is not a simple oneg rather, the paten holds the entire complex of human life in all its facets and relationships. Likewise, life at Notre Dame has not been that of mere assimilation of knowl- edge, but also development of the ability to make use of that knowledge in co-operative and social functions. Among the most precious memories of our high school days are the vari- ous activities in which we participated, developing the ability to communicate knowledge to others, to learn and explore with others, and to share with others the joy of living. Thus the social events and achievements at Notre Dame form an integral part of this our offering. The Music Department in cooperation with the Corettes of Sacred Heart staged a performance equal to a Broadway Hit. Among the highlights, we had our two esteemed vocalists. Ken Ellison, a senior, sang the ever popular I'll Be Home For Christmas. john Dodig, a fresh- man, sang the immortal White Christmas. Both per- formers were accompanied by the Swing Band, The Corettes were full of life, in tune with the current fad Hula Hoops, with their high stepping Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The Swing Band was, of course, the main component to the success of the show. With the jolly, Christmas in Killarney, this unique group of musicians brought lasting ovations from the crowd. The show would not be complete without a religi- ous feature. The moving Gesu Bambino was our finale. This song, sung so admirably by the Glee Club, truly depicted the true meaning of Christmas, that of Christ coming down in the Nativity to be the Saviour of mankind. With the aid of joe Hayes and of course Brother Pierre, how can we help but put on a great show. A3196 HE MINGLING of water and wine during the Mass is a two- fold symbol: it symbolizes, first, the mingling of the human and divine natures in the Person of Christ, and, likewise, the min- gling of body and spirit in rnan. Conscious of this fusion, Notre Dame ever seeks to develop the physical as well as the mental and spiritual in her students. We have known the excitement of the football Held, when players and spectators join in a thrilling display of school spirit, the agility and strength of the basketball court and the track field, the precision and skill of riflery, golf, bowling, and the other Sports. The Notre Dame man has made his mark in all these fields, and, whatever our athletic accomplishments, we offer them humbly along with the scholastic and social phases of our days at our beloved Notre Dame. 82 4 , f gif' f .2 :Ya ' I 'Af x 'r' ' g., 1' fn? . . The Knights were unheralded as they went into the season, but they soon gained the atten- tion of the area basketball fans. It marked the first season for Joe Bandiera as head basketball coach. It also was the first time that a Notre Dame basketball team ever qualified for the state tournament. The Knights had a well balanced team consisting of Nick Brunetti, Don McKenna, Pat Elia, Bill Gerner, Tom Moore and john Sullivan who all saw most of the action The ayvees also experienced a successful season They were led by Mike Heffernan Bill Santillo Alex Tonellt Harry Evangelist and john Popovich joe Tonelli and jim Perillo also saw a lot of action 93 1 c gy X 1 f 1 Muffy. - J , 1 f la nw' 1 R x 'lt . AND FAREWELL TO NOTRE DAME As the day of graduation approached more quickly than we had realized, we all felt mixed emotions. The feeling of pride in accomplishment and anticipation of the future was strong, but it was tempered with the sadness of leaving a place we had grown to love. As the last precious moments at Notre Dame slipped by, we became more sensitive to the things we had long taken for granted. The hilltop itself, the corridors, the last few classes, the parting smiles and handshakes, all took on a new and deeper significance. It has been said that when a person has learned to love a place, he can never really leave it. We are proud to leave our hearts behind with you, Notre Dame. XX'e Knights received our King.. Primarily con- cerned with his soul's welfare, he is a man of prayer. He strives to penetrate, as far as he can, the Truth that is God, for he recog- nizes the fact that love of God comes from knowledge of Him. In a word, a man of faith and honesty, of strength of character through self-mastery, of respect for the Christian family and law- ful authority, of leadership in the pursuit of good-that is a NOTRE DAME MAN. auvv-s-3 v'o U ' '
