Founded in 1902 as a missionary training school, Northwestern College had its beginnings in a Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Its goal was to prepare Christians for full-time service and to remain faithful to the teachings of the Bible, Cod honored that commitment, and by 1947 the school grew to include a seminary, a liberal arts college, and a conservatory of music. Three years later it became an accredited Bible College, Today Northwestern offers training in a variety of disciplines and remains true to its original purpose. One man who played a prominent role in the growth of Northwestern is Dr. William B. Berntsen. He has devoted his life to the training of Christian young people, first as a teacher, and then as president of the college. Even through times of struggle and seemingly impossible situations, President R fought to keep the vision alive. Today the school we know as Northwestern College ex¬ ists largely because of the faith and persistence of this man. In December of 1984, Dr. Berntsen resigned from the presidency after 18 years of service and was appointed to the office of chancellor. As a symbol of our apprecia¬ tion for everything he has done, we dedicate the 1985 Scroll to our beloved Mr. B.”

As students at Northwestern College, we are part of the continuing legacy. We have set aside this part of our lives for a time of concentrated learning and training. Our education serves a two-fold purpose. First, it is to help us to mature and become responsible as members of Cod ' s family. Se¬ cond, it is to prepare us to become a positive in¬ fluence on our world. However, even in the environment of a Chris¬ tian college, growth is a matter of choice. How much we learn is determined by how teachable we are. Similarly, the extent to which we affect our community is determined by the amount of effort we invest. May we be good stewards of our educa¬ tion and training by making them a part of our lifestyles. • 1, Stephen Opoku fellows along in his book during a lecture ■ 2.
