In l89O, steps were taken to change the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company to the Newport News Ship- building and Dry Dock Company. During its sixty years ot operation, besides building ships of all kinds, it has con- structed turbines and accessories tor some of the largest dams in the world, repaired thousands of ships for all nations, built railway cars and engines, floating power plants and many types ot miscellaneous machinery. The yard now employs approximately 6,500 men and is pres- ently in a period ot adjustment, so that it can continue to serve the peacetime needs ot our country.

THE ANCHOR'S l95O theme is unusually fitting. lt pays tribute to an activity for which the city of Newport News has become widely known-shipbuilding. Here on the World's Greatest Harbor, where the ways of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company dip down into the James have been built over 400 ships that have sailed the seven seas. As evidence of the sturdiness of these ships, the first tug built by the yard, the Dorothy, is still in active service in the Hampton Roads area. As evidence of the prom- inence of these ships, the Liner America, the Carrier Mid- way, the Battleship Indiana, the Cruiser Newport News, and others have figured in the nation's headlines. 2
