The hot afternoon of August 20 found about 75 potential football players beginning to develop into ldahois top team of 1949 under the coaching of J. A. Babe,' Brown and Dean Lewis. The work often became tedious but it paid off as the Bulldogs rang up nine straight wins over opponents from Idaho, Montana, Nevada., and Oregon. ' The new football stadium, aptly called Bulldog Bowl, must also have provided some inspiration as the Canines knocked over all conference foes to give themselves the only clear- cut Big Six Championship in the schoolis history. Statistics show that the Nampans were definitely superior in all fields as they piled up 2706 yards in total offense to their opponents' 1220. Under the accurate arm of Dale liuss, they completed 36 of 91 attempted passes for a 4-0 per cent completion average. ln the department that counts most the Bulldogs scored an amazing 285 points to 47 for the opposition. Dick King led the Nampa scoring with 62 points, followed closely by Dale Huss with 61. Nomvuw Kmwm' Www: Blmclu-:Ns1',tFr Ju' IJEAN Hmmv Du' Tm-lrlr ,.l'fI Emi Riuhl Enrl lmfl End I 6 I I Although the statc of ldaho doesn't provide for a state championship in football, the Nampa Bulldogs laid a claim, that was generally agreed upon by everyone, to the mythical title. llaving played all their conference games except the traditional Boise game, the Canines were slated to meet the unbeaten Kellogg eleven. The Northerners, having defeated everyone in that part of the state, were termed as a power house, with a 200-pound line average and a speedy backfield. Pre-game publicity didn't mean much to the Bulldogs as they literally mopped up the field with Kellogg, almost scoring at will to post a terrific 34-0 final score. llonors came thick and heavy as the team from N.H.S. was rated one of ldabo's all-time greats. Louie Nlaravilla, Dale Huss, Buster Hoff, and Wayne Blickenstaff were unanimous choices for the Big Six first team, accompanied by George Keim and Bob Luekenga, who also rated first team berths. Jay Dean, Dick King, and Norman Kinney were selected to the second squad, and llerb Day, Bill Miller, and Ralph Nichol were given honorable mention. Bus Eoff gained an additional honor when selected on the All-American football team. This distinction earns him the right to play in the annual national all-star football game, which will probably be played in Memphis, Tennessee, next August. llerb Day catches a pass and heads for Caldwell's goal. Buster drives for that extra yard against Boise. 76
