Ordinarily, the objective of any track team is to break previous records, and ordinarily several are broken yearly. But when a track team sets eighteen records in one Melissa Hart running their share of the meet. While in the distance medley, runners Iill Crouse, Melissa Hart, Brenda Mente, and Teresa Harper ran to finish third, field season, that's not so ordinary. Coach Ierry Lorimors girls track team accomplished this feat, The long hard February practices soon paid off as eight girls qualified for state. Sue Pribyl, Teresa llarper, Brenda Mente, and Melissa Hart ran in the mile relay to place second and became eligible for a fifth all time best. The 880 relay also placed second with lean Byrne. Laurie Vanlist, lill Crouse, and Upandoverwith speedandagility,RobinLohse strives over the third hurdle in the shuttle hurdle relay. A fight to the finish between Lori Stuhr and Nancy Madden resulted in two victories for the Muskies in the 100 yard dash. 88 Girls Track events sent one person, Iulie Powers to finish sixth in discus. This field event victory gave the Muskies the needed points to tie for fourth. Completing the season with 6-0 in dual meets, two and two in invitationals and third in Trojan Relays, the girls felt pride in a season of hard work and more than the usual amount of accomplishments, Ready, aim, fire. Comin' round the bend, Chris Ales quickens his stride to maintain his lead in the race. If ever there was a season for firsts and winning combinations, it was this season for Coach Dave Matthews' varsity and sophomore track teams. The varsity team brought home the trophy from the Keokuk Relays, placing first in the Class-A division. Four firsts were achieved in the meet including one by the 880 team of Andy Allison, Bill Anklam, Doug Fry, and Gary Monroe. Mike Mitchell won the mile run, Ieff Cochran took the 440 yard dash and the team of Cochran, Todd Duncan, Monroe and Craig Plowman broke the string in the mile relay. Compiling a total of 110 points, the varsity captured the Forwald relay. Individual wins eased the Muskies into that third outdoor win in as many tries. Victories were recorded by Ieff Lyon, in the high hurdles, Gene Bailey in the mile run Randall Eichelburger in the long jump and Tim Tyler in the discus. The varsity team felt the sting of defeat in a triangular meet in Bettendorf on April 26. They finished second to Bettendorf's varsity team. The Bulldogs dominated the meet, winning all but five events, but the Muskies did not place. The sophomore team also experienced their first loss, being clipped 73-72 by Bettendorf in the last event. The sophomores had wins Mu kie ower Relays in Iowa City winning nine of the meet's eighteen events. School records were set by the two-mile relay crew of Iim Barry, Mike Mitchell, Chris Ales and Dan Dietz, and once again by the infamous mile relay team of Cochran, Duncan, Monroe and Plowman. Sophomores Doug Anson, Tom Tyler, Al Ward and Ed Castillo also won their 880 in the 220 yard dash, the 880 relay, both the high and low hurdles, and both the high and long jumps. State qualifiers included Bill Anklam, placing 6th in the 220, Anklam, Doug Fry, Brad Smith and Ieff Cochran in the 880 relay, Mike Mitchell, and Tony Shellabarger in the mile, and Gene Bailey in the 2 mile.
