The Cirls Tennis team got an early start at their season as practice began at the beginning of March. Prior to this the majority of the girls worked out by doing exercises, running and lifting weights. New Coach Dan Beer psyched the girls for each meet by holding several pep talks. The season meets consisted of seventeen dual meetings, none of which were at home. Despite gallant efforts, the girls battled tough competition and won only one meet The team won an overwhelming victory of 7-2 over Burlington. Conquering all their opponents, Ice Kolar, Ieff Allen, Brian Litten, Scott Fisher and Mark Lawrence won in singles. The first Muskie Invitational held at the high school was made up of four teams: Muscatine, Camanche, Fort Madison and Burlington. Placing first was Camanche with ten points, followed by the Muskies with eight points. against Fort Madison. The varsity team consisted of six players. Throughout the season Diane Weis played first position, Martha Riley number two, and Mary Williams and Lovella Slot held spots three and four. The number five position was played by Sue Richmond and number six by Meg Lande. The next positions were between Teri Koehrsen, LuAnn Tietge, Traci Timmons, Laurette Slot, Meagan Conway and Ianet Pearson. Surviving a small tornado and rain storms, the 1977 Boys Tennis team came through with a winning year, the best one since 1968. Opening the season with a 5-4 win over Fort Madison, Coach Ron Kiser's team withstood threatening weather conditions while winning 4-2 in singles. In Ottumwa on April 1 the netters played out a 5-2 meet. Ionathan Knott won the only match of the day, despite the rainy weather. Practices after school on the high school courts usually lasted from 2-2 1!z hours a night. Commenting on their favorite rackets, some expressed that they got best results from Borgs, Wilson T-2000's and Davis Classics. Pressurized Dunlap tennisballs helped to bring victories. Boys!
