The department is broken down into five divisions in order to accomplish these tasks. First Division is responsible for all topside spaces for- ward of the superstructure, including the anchors, accom- modation ladders, one, two, and three hatches, and all the as- sociated equipment. ln addition, they maintain three troop com- partments and four troop heads. Second division is in charge ofthe ship's seventeen landing craft and the four boat davits. During a 1-Alpha they man the boats and the success or failure of this evolution depends heavily on the talent and training of these men. Third Division maintains the topside spaces aft of the su- perstructure. Operating four and five hatches, putting Mike boats in the water, refueling and towing are the special opera- tions performed by this division. In addition, they are responsi- ble for two troop compartments and two troop heads. Fourth Division's functions center around the ship's four twin 40-MM mounts and their directors. They also supervise stowage of all ammunition and are accountable for the small arms in the armory. Side Cleaners division operates out of the Bos'n locker on the forecastle and their tasks include issuing paint and cleaning gear, sewing canvas, and painting the sides.
