With involvement as their guide and a strong constitution as a foundation, the Minnechaug Student Council began the 1969-1970 school year. Under the capa- ble leadership of Alex Gray, and the guidance of Mr. Steven Castonguay, each meeting opened new channels of student participation and responsibility. Supported by the popular programs for Snack Break and School Beautification, valuable work in the three realms of driving, dress, and discipline crowded the schedule of each representative. Many agree that improved communica- tion and co-operation between stu- dents, faculty, and administration has been established largely as a result of the Student Council ' s work. With pa- tience and dedication, progressive steps were made in an ever-widening scope of efforts for a better Minnechaug. LEFT: Mr. Castonguay looks on as the meeting progresses. Football is a bruising game. It requires each play- er ' s dedication to aching muscles and weary limbs. Each football player ' s cour- age and stamina is challenged every time he steps onto the field. In the midst of mental strain and physical intimidation, who will stand tall? For Minnechaug ' s football team, the hopes and expectations of September materialized into but two victories. However, many talented underclassmen got a lot of varsity play- ing experience, and next fall there will be more victories. That is a promise. Frosh Finish 5-1 On The Season The caliber of play has improved considerably in the fresh- man football team during the past couple of years. The establ- ishment of little league football teams locally has brought young players literally into contact with the fundamentals of football playing, before they reach high school. Many of the members of the 1969 freshman football team were veterans of the little leagues, and they demonstrated their skills by producing a 5-1 season record. South Hadley was the only team which managed to stop the fledgling Falcons, who averaged 23 points a game, while holding the opposition to just 11. Head Coach Paul Des- lauriers is looking forward to this coming September to scan the new faces for varsity material. In this squad, he is likely to find a lot. FIRST ROW: R. Rauscher, M. Zulli, D. Bourbeau, Coach Whalen Booters Win 3 Out Of Last 4 The 1969 varsity team finished with a show- ing of 6-7-1. This was not indicative of what the booters could do, however. Aroused, the Falcons won three out of their last four games and tied with highly touted Cathredral. All-League picks Gary Harris, Bruce Fuller and Biff Fisher led the attack against Minnechaug ' s foes. They are sen- iors, however, and their golden cleats will have to be replaced. The filling of these shoes will have to be done by talented underclassmen — Rick (Rocket) Ingraham, Ken Cieplik (next year ' s Co-captains), Frank Bongiorni, Pat Twoom- ey, Rich Bourbeau and Kevin Courtney. With such a wealth of talent, hard work, and a little bit of Lady Luck, Minnechaug ' s booters will cer- tainly improve on last year ' s record. 164 Sophomore Pat Twomey is headed for the right place, the opponent ' s goal! Frosh Rich Bourbeau surprisingly broke into the starting lineup. Bruce Johnson contains an opponent. Senior Andy Emerson M m IE JB | 165 The Falcons start a fast-break up the field BOTTOM: E. Coach Morgan was never really sure which players he would use until game time, because the ones that hustled were prom- oted to varsity. This added incentive made everybody play their best. If this same spirit is carried over to next year ' s squad the 1970 outlook is bright. R BOTTOM, T. Sidor, H. Piepho, B. Nauman, M. Skipton, R. Gal- Q lant, J. Thomas. MIDDLE: J. Hebert, D. This year ' s freshman soccer team showed hustle and determination. They lost Rich Bourbeau and had to rely on hard practice, skill and teamwork. In November, the girls doffed their sweaters and kilts and stepped into newly made uniforms to perform at the basketball games. They worked hard on routines to go along with their new image, and the result was some original precision maneuvers. A well done job and a lot of dedication de- serves a big round of applause. The girls also played an entirely different ball game this year as the rules were changed to five players and fullcourt. This proved to be challenging for both the girls and Miss Dunn. Cen- tered around a group of teenagers, the plot showed how they feel when their parents aban- don them. David and Louise Michaels (Bill Spinn and Jonna Goulding) had just been mar- ried and adopted each other ' s children, Judy (Roxanne Kendall) felt that this meant that her father no longer cared for her, so along with the Filthy Five kidnapped her new sister. The play was staged half on a platform and half on the regular level. This enabled the audience to see two scenes at once. High spirits and countless laps around the track amid cries of MOVE, were the order of the day as the first year girl ' s tennis team compiled a fine record, losing only to Amherst and Longmeadow. Coach Brewer ' s policy of one lap for every negative thought and the girls ' own determination, promises that next year, rival Longmeadow will fall. SCENT-A-MENTAL J U R N E Y On May 15 and 16, the Girl ' s Synchronized Swimming Team took their audience on a Scent-a-mental Journey , as they presented their annual show. The show consisted of routines, written by the girls, which were named after well-known colognes or perfumes. The routines consisted of varying numbers of girls and included Brute , a solo by Bonnie Bridgman, Pub a duet by Kathy Snyder and Denise Hanson, and Wind Song , a trio choreographed by Leslie Blodgett and featuring Nancy Fleming, Joan Hebert and Debbie Nelson. The team paid tribute to its twelve seniors in the an nual Pomp and Circumstance which was somewhat varied from its tradi tional form. Instead of simply swimming down the pool, the senior members of the team performed an extremely difficult twelve-man dolphin chain. (A lifeguard was standing by in case one of the seniors didn ' t make it up!) The long weeks of hard practice were officially brought to a close with the presentation of roses to Coach Cascio, without whom the show would never have been pulled off. Many thanks to the lighting crew, Mike Lynch, Joe Twining, Ned Dean, and Jeanne Abrahamson. Congratulations to the entire team on an excellent performance. SmMm ' ;- ' -- l ' l -S BOTTOM ROW: C.
