if we are arrested every day, if we are exploited every day, if we are trampled over every day, don't ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. we must use the weapon of love. we must have compassion and understanding for those who hate us. we must realize so many people are taught to hate us that they are not totally re- sponsible for their hate. but we stand in life at midnight, we are always on the threshold of a new dawn. martin luther king 1929 -1968 we were trying to figure out what this place is all about. did we love it? did we hate it? we had spent enough time here, after all. enough time to have come to a decision one way or another. but even so, we couldn't. the following pages, especially the next four, represent the distillation of a considerable number of conversations, of the jotting down of ideas. we, of course, wanted to get to the essence of what it has been like to have been a student here for four years. we failed . . . because capturing the essence of anything is risky business, not to be under- taken lightly. but we hope that maybe once or twice in the next few pages, you will, in years to come, find a picture, an idea that releases that storehouse of sensations that we call memory. we would wish to trigger in you the sudden acknowledgement: yes, that's just the way it was . this emotional remembrance may trigger nostalgia. we are sorry, the dangers of art. 6
