Local gridiron enThusiasTs were pro- vided wiTh nine Thrill-packed games, five of which were MerchanT- ville vicTories and Tour oT which were deTeaTs. Bob Bush and Charlie Ball were chosen co-capTains of The Team. When Bush ,received a shoulder iniury 'which prevenTed his playing rnosT of The season, he resigned his co-capTaincy in Tavor ol George Rossner. Our head coach. Mr. MarTin A. Pocius, wiTh The aid of his assisTanT, Mr. C. Charles Haines, provided The plays which The Team used so adroiTIy in The T TormaTion and The new K TormaTion. Quick Thinking, TasT-acTing Frank Alles was The key man of These Two TormaTions in his viTaI posiTion aT quarTerback. Frank was sup- porTed by hard-charging I-larlow Henderson aT fullback and flanked by Ralph I-Iann aT IeTT halfback and Jack Schihrhauer aT righT half- back. These IasT Two were The ground gaining boys, wiTh SchiTFhauer specializing in end runs and I-Iann showing his Top lorm in quick opening line plays. I-lap Parvin did exceIIenT work in backing up The line on The defense. To The righT oT Parvin in The guard posiTion was Charlie Ball and To The IeIT was Bob I-Iolmberg. The Two speedy Tackles were Tom Evaul on The IeTT side of The line and .loe CosTanza on The righT. The experT passing of Frank Alles was caughT by Vern Soder- Iand aT The righT exTremiTy of The line and George Rossner aT The IeTT. The season was rounded ouT by The annual TooTbaII banqueT in The gymnasium where a large number of MerchanTviIIe Tons gaThered To honor The Team. FIRST ROW: Donald O'NeaI, co-manager: Rudolph PraTe, co-manager, Thomas Evalfl, Ralph Hann, Vernon Soderland, Charles Ball, co-copTain, George Ross- ner, co-capiain, Frank Alles, Gabriel Federici, Warner Parvin, Roberi' Bush, Mr. Pocius. SECOND ROW: Joseph CosTanza, Jack Schiffhauer, Raymond Kramer, Roberf Cariy, John Hare, RoberT Simkins, Charles Haughey, Harlow Henderson, CIiITord Dayion, William Cann, VincenT Galiardi. Elder, who has produced so many ou+s+anding ieams in Merchanlville High School, ihis year realized an ambi+ion of long sfanding. To him and 'lo fhe 'leam go our hearliesl' congra+ulo+ions for 'lheir brilliani' record. Mr. Elder and fhe boys compiled a +o+al cf1'wen+y-+wo vicfories oui ol +wen+y-six s'I'ar+s. The sfarfing line-up consisled of four seniors and one sophomore. George Dempsey led fhe feam and all of Souih Jersey in scoring from his posiiion as forward. Paired off wi+h Dempsey af fhe olher forward spoi was Ted Joya, a sopho- more who eniered Merchan+ville High School ihis year and almosl immediaiely won a posifion on fhe varsily squad. Manning fhe pivol' spol' was big Jim Wiggins, who also scored his share of poinls. Playing +he guard posi+ions and offering excellenl defense were Glenn Conklin, skilled af las?-passing, and Kenny Buller, known for his versafilily.
