HERB BUCKNER LARRY HEATHCOTT HOWIE JENSEN Mississippians Managed Memphis, Sept. 20 — Ole Miss found Memphis State could handle almost every- thing that came its way. The Tigers battled the highly favored Rebels all over the field before losing 17-0. The score was the closest State had ever come to the Rebels in the history of the series. Ole Miss got a second quarter field goal and two third-period touchdovsms to win. The main Memphis State threat died on the three-yard line in the last quarter. Football The Memphis State football team won four games and lost five during the 1958 season. It was the first year for the Tigers under Coach Billy Murphy. Maroons Maul State College, Miss., Oct. 11 — Mississippi State was too strong, fast, and consistent for Memphis State as the Maroons won 28-6. The Tigers ' only score was the most sensa- tional play of the game. Robert Lyles went 99 yards with an intercepted pass in the last quarter to score.
