1 100 Westerners Attend Round-Up Round-Up, a time for ten- allon hats, chaps, bright western shirts, and colorful full dresses, brings out the western spirit in the many stu- dents of LHS. Round-Up is highlighted by the election of favorites, a talent show in the audi- cinddsquare-dancing in the gym to a i i y an . After the talent show held in the auditorium, students, dressed in western garb in the tradi- tional Hound-Up fashion, enjoyed square darw- ing to the music of Tommy Hancock and his Roadside Playboys. With dances varying from the Virginia Heel to Red River Valleyi' stu- dents promenaded over the gym with as much spirit as a cowhand on pay day. Contests are held at Round-Up and leather belts with Round-Up '55 on the back are given as prizes. Shown watching Betty Rut- edge, writer of the winning slogan, measure Jeanette Taylor, the designer of the winning program cover, for her belt, are winners Bob Burgess, Western instrument, Bette McCann, original poem, Ouida Deatherage, best posterg Favonia Dial, best-dressed girl, and Don Gar- nett, best-dressed boy. The best-dressed bo s and girls are Naomi Johnson and Donna Coulb, runners-up, and Favonia Dial, best-dressed girl, back row, Stuart Hudnall and Roy Day, runners-up, and Don Camett, best dressed boy.

Shown below are senior Westemer football Elayers and senior girls in an exhibition basket- al game at the senior party. On the court are Suzette Francis, Coach O,Banion, Roy Day, Sharon Chick, Beverly Webb, and Phil Williams. After the Amarillo and Borger basketball ames sock ho s were held in Chapman Field gym. Shown above are Marslga Brock and Bobby Ha ood bo ping after the Amarillo game. Records of Glenn Miier, Bill? Maye, Ella Mae Morse, the Clovers, and many other well-known artists provided the music. Seen trippinfg the light fantastic in the boys' gym at an all- school party a ter the Borger game are several basketball players and their dates. A victory at the game made the evening possible for lots of fun. These parties were sponsored by the Student Council under the direction of the Recreation Committee. Shown below are Toni Bannister, Yvonne Skinner, and Larry Merriman selling cokes at the party on Round-Up night. One of these tables was seen at eve all-school party. These refreshments were welcomed after a rogram in the auditorium or a fast dance in the gym. The profit made on cokes was placed in the Student Council treasury. 151

L--. Parents Visit LH During Open House The annual PTA Open House highlighted Public Schools Week in Lubbock this spring semester. Activities were planned by the diferent departments with student participation. M ethods of work, folders, projects, and displays were available for parents, teachers, and students to view. Student Council mem- bers served as guides., 0R1G or THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE A ,,b six ,, n ,g, ,a 'si Wi: During the spring PTA Open House, English room 186 exhibited posters and ictures denoting the time of Julius Caesar and tlhe origin of the English language. Shown looking at a picture of a Roman so dier are Iettie Evans, Carolyn Babain, Mrs. C. T. Babain, Mr. C. T. Babain, and Mrs. Haskell Keeton. The chemistry department had demonstrations of various experiments the night of the Open House. One of these experiments was that of filling a tube with liquid oxygen and placing a cork in the tube. When the oxygen vaporizes it forces the cork out of the tube with great force creating a loud bang. Waiting for the explosion are Bill Sparks, Mr. I. C. Richardson, two junior high school visitors, and Harlon Lamkin. Kathy White, Mr. H. L. Graves, Gary Graves, and homemaking teacher Mrs. H. R. Nesmith are shown admiring student made dresses that were on exhibit in room 331. Dresses for children as well as those for teen-agers were on display. There were also demonstrations of the sewing of zippers, buttonholes, and seams. Folders on special projects were displayed. All phases of homemaking were demonstrated and explained in the rooms devoted to these subjects. 153
