David Charles RICHARDSON was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on April 8, 1914, son of Mrs. Anne Kate fSchamberJ RICHARDSON and the late Mr. I. W. RICHARDSON. He attended Meridian High School and Marion iAlabamal Institute before entering the U. S. Naval Academy, on June 27, 1932. Graduated and commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Navy on June 4, 1936, he subsequently progressed to the rank of Vice Admiral, dating from August 14, 1968. After graduation from the Naval Academy in June 1936, he was assigned to the battleship TENNESSEE and later joined the USS DOWNES as Communications Officer, where he served until February 1939 when he reported to the Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, for flight training. After receiving his wings in April 1940 he was assigned to Fighter Squadron FIVE where he served until December 1942, participating in combat operations in both the Atlan- tic and Pacific theaters including the assault on Guadalcanal and its subsequent defense. From January 1943 to January 1945, Admiral RICHARDSON served with and commanded Flight Operational Training and Fighter Training units in Jacksonville, Sanford and Daytona Beach, Florida as well as serving on the Staff of Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet. Subse- quent duties included assignments at the Royal Navy Staff College, London, England, the U. S. Naval War College, Newport, R. I., Air Group THIRTEENQ the Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Executive Officer, USS BADOENG STRAIT and in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations tAir Weapons Analysisl, before joining the Staff of Commander Striking and Support Force, Southern Europe as Plans Operations and Intelligence Officer. He commanded USS CIMARRON and USS HORNET prior to serving his second tour of duty in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations, this time with the Strategic Plans Division. In February 1964, he became Commander Fleet Air NorfolkfCommander Naval Air Bases, FOURTH and FIFTH Naval Districts. Then in February 1966, he assumed command of Carrier Division SEVEN and in August of that year transferred to command of Task Force SEVENTY- SEVEN ofthe SEVENTH Fleet. On July 5, 1967, he reported as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations iAirJ, Navy Department and in August 1968 became Commander of the SIXTH Fleet. Vice Admiral RICHARDSON is married to the former Jeanne McHUGH SIMONDS of San Diego, California, and has six children, David W. falso a naval aviatorb, Suzanne, Robert, Ruth- anne, Schamber and Samuel.
