Leonard Foster Mason was born in Middleboro, Ken- tucky, on February 22, 1920. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio, and was promoted to private first class in March 1943. He was stationed at Marine Barracks for training first at Parris Island, South Carolina, then at the naval proving grounds, Indian Road, Maryland, and finally at Camp Le June, North Carolina. Ordered into the field in October,

1943, he was sent to the Pacific and served as an auto- matic rifleman with the marines. He was wounded in an attack on Japanese forces on Guam on July 22, 1944, -and died on board the USS EL- MOFIE the following day. Leonard was buried in the sea off the island of Guam. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor with the citation quoted on rear inside cover. n
