And the stage toK tdur years has been to us the campus of Lenoir Rhyne. We are the blood of this stage — and we, as students, make Lenoir Rhyne the purpose- ful institution she is. Here we have played many parts — freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, scholar, athlete, clown, friend, m te. We are invaluable to her growth, her educational developments, her hopes and aims for a better society. Some of our performances here have been commendable while others not so praise-worthy — but all our roles have provided us richly and rewardingly with knowledge to have and use; memories to bless and burn; friends to love and trust. j l - ' • --- ' ' V The curtain will presently fall to end the play that began in 1952. No one will deny this was a hit; but now let us preview the current cast and play itself — presentjr J Lenoir Rhyne ilauA UUe Dedicate This Book To miss Because of your untiring efforts for, and deep abiding de ' Otion to Lenoir Rhyne; Because of your wondr ous ability and financial integrity; Because of vour eager help and kindly understanding; Because of your years of loval ser ' ice . . . we take pleasure in presenting you this issue of the 1956 Hacawa. Within these HAIls, C ' Ampus, and WAlls are hving memories, and these memories all mirror a prosperous 1955- 1956. The hopes and prayers for expansion began to materialize: A successful campaign for $1,500,- 000 was experienced; construction on the audito- rium and gvm was begun; a $147,000 gift from the Eord Foundation was received; new teachers came while our old ones were away better preparing themselves to help us. Educational advancement was ours. We strode high in other fields . . . One of Dr. Keiser ' s debators became the United States national champion in extempore speaking; his debate teams kept up the good work that began many years ago; the Playmakers gave a pleasing presentation of The Heiress ' to first-nighters; Coach Stasa ' ich with his assistants guided our football team to the North State Championship, and a triumph in the second annual Palmetto Bowl . . . Our social life was highlighted bv a dance bv nationallv prominent bandleader Buddv Morrow . . . The eflecti eness of religious organ- izations was seen: the Religious Council did a re- markable job, as usual, in the preparation and presentation of Student Ser ' ices and Religious Emphasis Week . . . The Chapel Committee of- fered us many excellent speakers . . . The vear 1955-1956 was a jovous, prosperous, wondrous ad- dition to our life. The memories vill linger . . . Cromer President PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Here at Lenoir Rhyne we ha ' e been partners in the thrilling enterprise of learning how to h e completely. While helping us to develop intellectually, so- cially and spiritually, our College had entered a new period of development. The years 1955 and 1956 have ushered in a vigorous program of expansion for finer service. Visible evidences are be- ginning to appear in the form of new buildings. You of the present student body have contributed ' aliantly to this surge for- ward. Members of the Class of ' 56 have rendered conspicuous ser ice in the mo ' ement For a Greater Lenoir Rhyne. May the years ahead find you and your Alma Mater ever rising to higher levels of achievement and ser ' ice. With this fervent desire I count it a joy to be Lenoir Rhyne ' s servant for your sake. Kuhn Night Officer September 1937 — October 1953 Deceased — December 5, 1955 Pfl e Nineteen Student Government The Student Government members are elected by the Student Body. This group is the heart of the students, and the secret of the success of their go ' erning lies in the co-operation of the students with the elected officers to enforce the rules and regulations as set forth in the Constitution. When they fail, it is usually because we fail them. Under the leadership of President Dave Wright, the Cabinet initiated an orientation program for the freshmen; appointed a day student adviser to the Cabinet; sold blazers on campus; published a day student newsletter; presented in chapel pro- grams dealing with the honor system; continued work on a new Constitution. These are some of the major highlights of this year ' s student government, but they busied them- selves with many other matters. It was a progressive year! It is true one cannot study the sun with saucy looks, nor can one study books with saucy looks . . . But it one is to know the truth, then study must be a diligent deep-searching. In our role of student, we have studied the past, analyzed the present, and are ready to launch out into the future with our knowledge. May our knowledge al A ' ays be the truth. u Sciucu looks . . . Class of 1956 ALL ' S WELL THAT ENDS WELL! . . . Four illustrious years -all high- lighted by different, pleasing, trying, diffieult situations and people . . . Our drama opened in 1952, and each scene, each act was packed full of firsts . Not soon will we forget that first week on campus: Did we ha ' e a lot to learn! . . . Our first college class— so many profs and which room? . . . Our first college dance, football, basketball, baseball . . . And as the years passed we became less green . . . Our run became shorter and shorter; we realized that our work and play would soon end and would we be better in moving on to a larger stage or would our performances not have mellowed? . . . These four years — three to some — have all been too short, but thev hold many memories. Looking back on this last vear of ours we see: Homecoming . . . we won a prize . . . Sadie Hawkins Dav . . . more money than we ever expected . . . Career Conference . . . Turkey Day . . . Christmas . . . with those long two weeks . . . Exams . . . Semester ' s end . . . We began to get things in order . . . March, April, and May . . . Never! February 3, 1955 was a history making clay on our campus at Lenoir Rhyne. On that day the cur- tain was pulled on a proposal for new additions to our present stage. An enthusiastic audience of LR students, Hickory citizens, North Carolinians, and others responded with an applause of approval. The prize winning slogan, Hearts and Hands To- gether, led each participant in the expansion pro- gram to dig deeply into his pocket for increasing the set of educational opportunities at LR. In de- monstration of their eagerness 98% of the student body pledged their support to the construction of our set. A closer look at the new Lenoir Rhyne shows an addition of seven new buildings. Thev include an auditorium, music building, gym, science building, student union building, and a women ' s dormitory. To construct a setting for the years of plavs to come requires many hours of hard labor, patience, and consistent support. The audience of ' 55 was privileged to see the first act of the great program. The opening day, the actual campaign drive, ground breaking for two of the buildings, and beginning work on the auditorium and gym. The years ahead will fill in our play and the grand finale will not only show a finished set but the result of the faithfulness, hope- fulness, and love of all who helped to build A GREATER LENOIR RHYNE. We have tried to capture some of the things that will bring back happy memories. To the seniors who bring to a close their college days, we hope this issue of HAlls, CAmpus, and WAlls will be treasured. We have taken the privilege of taking one page of your Hacawa, and what we say is actually in fun. Like most editors and staffs we were amused (?) at many people. At those who didn ' t keep appointments, or more, at those who didn ' t make any; at those who gave expensive suggestions; at those who reminded us that they were afraid they might not get into the yearbook because THEY had failed to send back their proofs; at all those silly people who asked what they should wear for pictures ... we always suggested clothes! Perhaps you will find mistakes . . . YOUR name may be misspelled ... we no doubt have made many errors. We sought long and late into the nights for them. So we must ask for your bearing with us. However, YOU too made mistakes . . . mostly by your lack of cooperation. As we sit here typing this last page of the 1956 Hacawa we feel rather selfish. All the kidding aside, the joy we have received from doing your yearbook can ' t be told. There were the hectic moments, but when they passed everything was fine . . . We hate to see it end. If you enjoy the results as much as we have enjoyed putting it together, everyone will be happy. To everyone who did even the smallest favor we give our deepest thanks. To the Schaeffer girls we thank especially for putting up with us, for feeding us, for sharpening pencils and sweeping floors; To our photographer we sincerely thank for a swell job; To Mr. Coursey, our engraver, and Mr. Keck, our publisher, we thank for being patient and understanding; To Professor McCreary for advice, and Miss Barger for money we give special rejoicing; To Mr. Aiken for his help in time of need we thank . . . As Mr. Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, once wrote, . . . Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good (day) ' til it be to-morrow. Goodbye! We hope you have liked it!
