Miss Myk, our sponsor, has donated more hours of her time for this project than any other person. She not only advised us in many of the problems connected with our publication, but also worked with us, and often alone without us. We were honored by the pleasure of working with her, and we could not have asked for a more capable or a nicer person as our sponsor. 8 pall lA2l :5C0l98 LEFT TO RIGHT: Alfred Hurshburger, Photography Editor, Emil Lebedovych, Editor-in-chief, Chuck Werle, Advertising Manager, Marguerite Starr, Art Editor, Bob Secson, Copy Editor, Erwin Merritt, Sales Manager. They were officially proclaimed as the Class of 1954 and promptly chose Bill Sullivan, presidentg Dick June, vice- presidentg Shirley Walker, secretaryg and Coy Gordon, treasurer, to be their able leaders. Their first test of courage came on the athletic field, when they were defeated after a great battle with a highly favored sophomore unit in the annual field day. Disregarding defeat they came back in the spring to put on one of the best fresh- men-sophomore proms the school has ever witnessed. Without serious catastrophe the freshman year ended. The group was no longer composed of green eager freshmeng they were con- fident sophomores. For class officers Bill Sullivan, Chuck Van Dusen, Judy Jam- ieson and Jeanette Stone were elected. The class showed superiority by trouncing the freshmen in the field day. In the Student Council elections these sophomores staged a great campaign placing Emil Lebedovych as president and ending the junior domination of the student council offices. The class made a beautiful floral rope which finished a truly great sophomore year. Rising up the tree of knowledge, the class gained the distinction of being juniors. To lead them through this eventful year Bill Sullivan, Chuck Werle, Judy Jamieson, and Coy Gordon were chosen president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. In April, 1953, the junior play, Drums of Death, was pro- duced starring Chuck Werle, Dick June, and Nancy Church. In the spring Student Council elections, Dick June was elected vice-president. Last but not least was the Prom, which turned out to be a huge success. The gyrnnasium was beautifully decorated with artificial palms and flowers resembling a scene in a picturesque garden. In the fall of 1953, after meeting the requirements in full, they were given added responsibilities and were recognized as seniors. For the final year in high school, the class officers were Bill Sullivan, Harold Middleton, Susan Snobleli and Coy Gordon. In the senior play, Wally Branson and Marjorie Van Kleek teamed up with the rest of the cast to present a hilarious three act comedy, Ill-3: Barry's Etchings. The biggest project of their four years in high school was the Pantherscope. Emil Lebedovych and his staff succeeded in composing one of the best Pantherscopes in Lapeer High School history. The Prom, Senior Trip, and Swingout fulfilled their expectations and the week of Baccalaureate, Honors Assembly, and Commencement passed all too quickly. ' This class, which passed into history as the Class of 1954, will always remem- ber and appreciate the guidance and help which was bestowed upon them by their fellow students and sponsors. Drums of Death starred Dick June, Chuck Werle, and Nancy Church. They were ably supported by the re st of the fine cast. One of the most eerie plays produced in Lapeer High School, Drums of Death took place in an isolated swamp in the south. Screams and files might come through a door at any moment but Dick June did a fine job of keeping the ladies calm. Chuck Werle relieved the tension at odd moments by talking to Myrt on the phone. We were honored by having one of our cast receive the Dramatics Award for the year. Chuck Werle was chosen for this recognition over all other actors. Mrs. Florence Teachout directed the cast to an outstanding pro- duction with the help of the student directors, Frank Davis and Helen Coulter. 42 enior Way FIRST ROW: Mrs. Teachout, Wally Branson, Marjorie Van Kleek, Rita Stacy SECOND ROW: Chuck Werle, Carr Baldwin, Margaret Foot, Sue Pohl, Rose- mary Truax. Actually, in a way, they are the most important people of the school. Although they do not make the big decisions of the administration, nor, like the faculty, do they determine the students' fate when report cards come out, they have a job to do. They provide transportation for 650 of our rural studentsg they do all the secretarial work of the school. They provide lunches for 250 people and keep the building and grounds in order. We realize what a big job it is and wish to thank these people for all the benefits we receive from them. Mr. Henry Jagow Miss Thelma Lowe Mrs. Gladys Calk1ns Mr . While they came out on the bottom of several scores, they never went down without a healthy scrap. Every member of the team did his share in turning out a fine performance. The team of blue and gold was led by eleven seniors along with underclassmen who showed remarkable ability. Yes, to the team of 1953-54, we say, Nice Going, Panthers! 98 Norman Hill Robert Albrecht NORMAN HILL received the Kirk White Trophy, given annually to the most valuable member of the football team.
