Ticket, and Library committees provide opportunities for students to cooperate and participate in the management of school affairs. The heads of these committees form the Advisory Board which guides the work of the Council. VARSITY TENNIS ALT HOUGH tennis is as yet a comparatively new sport in varsity athletics at John Adams, the local racquetcers have established an enviable record on the city clay courts in the past few years of interscholastic competition. Under the skillful tutelage of Coach Ted W Ptacck. the present squad, strengthened by the return of three match-winning lettermen. shows good promise of maintaining John Adams' prominence among the city's netters. by a strong possibility of capturing the eastern division championship. All the home games for the season will be played at Woodland Hills Park against schools in eastern Cleveland and its suburbs, according to the schedule made by the Cleveland Interscholastic Tennis Association. of which the former captain and present manager of the local team. William Chaikin, is vice president. Positions on the team are gained by competitive ladder elimination. each man receiving a ranking ranging from one to seven. The seventh man is open to all challengers at any time and if defeated he must relinquish his position to his vanquisher. Further rise on the ladder can be made by defeating the player whose ranking is just one above.

HONOR SOCIETY FOUR years ago. the John Adams Chapter of the National Honor Society was inaugurated here. Only fifteen per cent of the 1 2A s whose averages are above 83. ten per cent of the I2Bs with averages above 84. and five per cent of the 1 I A s whose scholarship rating exceeds 85 are eligible for membership. Besides this scholastic requirement the candidates must be outstanding in the three other qualities which the society emphasizes; character. leadership, and service to the school. Participation in club activities, honor study halls, the Student Council, guarding, and general dependability as shown by the opinions of various members of the faculty are the determining factors in selecting members. Since its first induction in 1931. the National Honor Society has grown in membership from 32 to 86. its present enrollment. Members of the society act as tutors under the direction of Miss Grace Martin. A faculty committee appointed by E. F Butterfield, principal, and consisting of the Misses Katherine Fowler. Lena McCann. Gertrude Wiley. Fred N. Burroughs, and Edwin F. Helman sponsors this society. ftily-onf
