VARSITY BASKETBALL ST ART ING the 1934 35 basketball with a 33-20 victory over John Hay. the John Adams basketeers slumped, and then came back to play a good brand of basketball for the remainder of the season. Ikie Friedler. high scoring forward and guard, and Bert Davidian. a dependable guard, became ineligible for scholastic competition at midyear. However. Sam Goldman. Phil Fleishman, and Wendel Sarmir carried on to make the season somewhat of a success. At times Coach Kregenow s bardcourtmen seemed to turn stale during a game, but were able to snap out of the lapse in time to give the opposition a stiff battle. In other contests the Locals got off to a flying start, kept going, and never lost the lead. Goldman was shifted from center to a forward position early in the season, and dented the meshes with enough consistency to lead the Presidents in the scoring department. He was followed closely by Fleishman and Sarmir. T he Kregmen scored 380 points as against their opponents' 378. but were able to finish on the long end of the score in only six of the 1 3 games played. = MAROON AND GOLD . IN their last year under Coach Kregenow. the Maroon and Gold grid-men climaxed the 1934 season by crushing South. 18-6. An Adams football season is always somewhat of a success if South High, a traditional neighborhood rival, is beaten. Another highlight of the season was the victory over the Purple and Gold of Cathedral Latin. These two victories, combined with five losses and a tie. completed the football season. Captain Bill Palgut was on numerous occasions called upon to rally his linemen to withstand the charges of the opponent. Diminutive Jack Jones, big Sam Goldman, the fiery Steve Eggett. and A1 Curry, one of the best school-boy-punters in the city, made up the President backfield. This backfield showed flashes of real power but never seemed to get going at top speed. At the present time Coach Kozak, who has taken over the football coaching tasks, is putting the candidates through spring practice. John. VARSITY TRACK FROM the beginning of time men have enjoyed the pure wholesome satisfaction of a race well run. the pleasure of individual competition, and the invigorating urge for gracefulness, for speed, for sturdy feats of strength and endurance. T o encourage vouth to participate in the manly sport of running and jumping, the ancient Greeks inaugurated the Olympiads, religious feasts which placed track forever in the annals of history. Today, over two thousand seven hundred years since the first Olympiad. John Adams High School is represented by a track squad that honors the same ideals of sportsmanship. Centering on a nucleus of 12 lettermen. Coach R. E. Knesal has a well-balanced track squad, which is one of the top-notch running machines in the city for the spring of 1935. In spite of the poor showing at the indoor C. A. C. meet, due to lack of practice, the present team shows enough lorm to more than duplicate the successful season of 1934. when John Adams copped 3 out of 5 dual meets. The class of ‘35 takes off its hat to William A. Slyh. faculty manager, who has made possible the season pass, enabling every pupil in John Adams to witness every track meet on the schedule for a cost of little more than one cent per meet , thus making track, the oldest of all sports, self-supporting—a feat of which few schools in Greater Cleveland can boast. turty-cighi
