It would be impossible for us to record completely one school year at Jefferson, but we hope that what we have portrayed will enable you to relive your own school days. Time which has passed can never return, but memories of the past can be as rich as the experience itself. We hope that this book helps to keep those memories alive. The jeff's journal Staff Board of Education t Ben J. Zaugg; E. R. Hollingsworth; Mrs. Marcella Harris, Secretary; Clifford P. Carlson, President; Mrs. Frances S. Shafer; John G. Floden; Armer E. Severin. Superintendent Dr. Shaheen came to Rockford on July 1, 1965, to assume the position of superintendent of schools. Prev- iously he was superintendent at Commack, New York. Dr. Shaheen is responsible for the schools as a whole, super- vising the hiring of teachers and ordering of books, meeting with the Board of Education, and informing the people of the community about the condition and needs of the schools. Administration This is Mr. Hartts first year as Jefferson's principal. He came to our school in 1959 as our assistant principal. Before working at Jefferson he was a biology teacher n-d assistant principal at West High School and had served for a year as a o-ordinator of the junior high school curriculum commission. This is Mr. Grahamis first year with the Rockford School System. Be- fore coming to Jefferson, he was Superintendent of schools in Lanark, Illinois. Mr. Graham has the trying task of being the Dean of Boys. Some of his many responsibilities are supervising extra activities and working with new teachers. Also, when Mr. Hart is absent he serves as principal. Dean of Girls When we hear people speak of Mrs. Billingham, Dean of Girls, we naturally think of discipline. Although this is one of her duties, she also selects and supervises assemblies, has charge of the monitors, coordinates cafeteria seating, and makes up the school calendar. Guidance Cou selors Mr. Harold Gambr i . i r. John R. Williams University of Iorthem Illinois Illinois, M.Ed. . , University, M.S.Ed. This year there are four guidance counselors. Mr. Williams and Mr. Gambrel have charge of the ninth graders, Mr. Long the eighth graders, and Mrs. Lowman the seventh graders. The purpose of the counselors is to consult with students and helpthem to work out their personal problems. This year Jefferson added two new guidance counselors to the staff, Mrs. Lowman who was previously an Enghsh teacher at Jefferson, and Mr. Long, who was one of our commercial teachers. ffice Staff 3 ..llllllll The pictures above portray our faithful office workers. The Student Government usually has a major project during the school year. This year it was tentaw tively decided to try to raise $1,000 for the Peace Corps toward equipping a needy area in Latin America. Therefore, much of the time was spent in a variety of fund-raising activities. The Student Government representatives meet each Tuesday under the guidance of Mr. Melvin. In the past, the Student Government has had two important standing committees. One was operating the lost and found. This has been abandoned, and the responsibility has been assumed by interested students who are not members of the Student Government. The major function of Student Government is probably to give the elected homeroom representatives a time and place to meet and express opinions and wishes of individuals and groups as they may help to make Jefferson the best school possible. inth Grade Student Government NINTH GRADE STUDENT GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES THIRD ROW: Vicky Lyn Butterfield, Brad Lofgren, Steve Harris, Jim Ely, Jackie Merryman, JuneCarlbom. In 1956, Jeffersonts Glee Club was organized. A group of students asked Mr. Erwin if they could have a singing organization. Mr. Erwin told them they could have a glee club if it could meet in the morn- ings so that members of the band and orchestra could also be members. There are still some band and orchestra participants in the Glee Club. Since band and sports participants have uniforms, the Glee Club members thought they should, too; therefore, they sold candy and were able to purchase sixty-eight choir robes of a bright red color. In the Glee Club nobody is left out. Anybody who wants to may join. There are no tryouts. Only the Ensemble is hand-picked. 120 FOURTH ROW: June Carlbom, Marcia Gossett, Sherry Bare, Maureen Ogren, Jan Gartner, Julie Ekleberry, Barb Nelson. Mr. Birch, Jeffersorfs swim coach, urges more seventh grade boys to participate in swimming activi: ties, because they have a good chance of earning letters, as did John Hjelm as a seventh grader last year. Even though the school turnsout at the swimming meets was low, we won nine out of thirteen meets and came in third in the allecity relays. This year we hoped to recapture the first place title in the City swim meet which we had won in 1960, but Lincoln finished first with 75 points, and Jefferson was close behind with 70 points. John Hjelm, most improved; Steve Swanson, captain; Brent Johnson, most valuable. Varsity Swim Team a k THIRD ROW: Dan Shuey, Steve Swanson, Mr. Birch, Brent Johnson, Dale Fuller. Although the game was close and the varsity was leading most of the time, the faculty finally won by a score of 62 to 55. High scorer for the faculty team was Mr. Martinetti with 17 points. Mike Thomas took scoring honors for the varsity with 13 points. Duringhalf time there was an added attraction. Scott Brees and Cliff Rigsby demonstrated their skill on the trampoline. Cheerleaders BACK ROW: Karen Swenson, Cindy Kollberg, Judy Currie. FRONT ROW: Mary Beth Lindstrom, Rose Rumery, Brenda Minor, Madelynn Crill. Our cheerleaders are chosen by Miss Gardner, Miss Visser, and Mrs. McComock. To try out for cheerleader, a girl has to make up her own cheer. Those who are chosen are expected to practice regularly under the direction of Miss Gardner. Every Monday and Wednesday they meet in the upper gym to practice the school cheers. In order to continue as cheerleaders, the girls must maintain at least a C average in scholarship and B in conduct. 159 Intramurals There were 70 boys participating in in- tramural flag football this year. There is no tackling in flag football, the field is 80 yards long, and there are 8 boys on a team. There were about 130 boys participat- ing in intramural basketball. The 8th and 9th graders were combined, while the 7th grade boys competed separately. The playing time is somewhat less than in varsity basketball. FOOTBALL CHAMPS. Brent Johnson, Brad Haney, John Sulak, Tom Bailey, Stu Blomquist, Kim Marlin, Dennis Below. EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADE BASKET- BALL CHAMPS. Jim Schmidt, Brent John- son, Greg Johnson, Mike Thomas, Steve Alsbury, Kent Olson, Mike Shulz. SEVENTH GRADE BASKETBALL CHAMPS. Brian Oleson, Kip Brees, Dave Hintzsche, Steve Renne, Matt Bradley, Mitch Potter. 160 Intramural Wrestling WRESTLING CHAMPIONS. Second Row: Jan Capone, John Plomos, Dave Cox, Brad Lofgren. First Row: Jim Schmidt, Steve Patterson, Kenny Lewis, Alan Dearth, Larry Graham. Jefferson Junior High School is one of the few junior highs that have intramural wrestling. At Jefferson the coach is Mr. Gustafson. Wrestling gets the boys in shape for football. One good thing about wrestling is that the smaller boys can join too, because it doesn,t mat- ter how tall or how small they are. For wrestling the boys are arranged in weight classes, so they usually wrestle only those boys in their own division. After about four weeks of wrestling practice and conditioning, the actual matches are held. The finals were held in the main gym on March 16. 161 YEARBOOK STAFF RESPONSIBIlITIES The names of the Yearbook Staff members, together with the list of pages for which they were responsible, are listed below in order that the curious reader may know which worker should receive credit for each page.
