After I had rrdden upstarrs rn one of the new elevators I glanced Into Room 208 and I saw a famrlrar frgure dressed rn brown It was EDI FREEMAN the geometry teacher I poked my head rn the typmg room and saw Ardyce Mrller patlently showlng her class how to type I u J space fr f space I looked rn the musrc room and who should be glvmg vorce lessons but JOAN LEEHEY She was very engrossed In her SIIIQIIIQ so I dldn t bother her Instead I headed for the chemrstry room and saw CHARLIE CABALKA rnstructor explarmng a formula In addntlon to Latm taught by LEROY STRICKLE three other languages were now berng taught at dear oldl H S They were Spanrsh taught by Martha Dral French taught by PETE PETERSEN and Chmese taught by LUCI ZIMPHER. Smce I Hyhs were bemg drstnbuted and I was handed a bunch by VIRGINIA STIEFH. the Journahsm teacher who told me to take them out to shop Itrotted outslde There was an F F A meeting gorng on and since I drdn t wrsh to mtermpt rt Ihanded thel I-Iyhs to the sponsor WENDELL CIRCUS When I went back rnsrde the school Isaw BONNIE FORD the art teacher puttmg up posters about a fme arts dance She told me that MABEL FAGAN also taught art Two teachers were needed because there were so many artistrc students ln I H S intendent of schools wrth BARBARA BELZER hrs secretary perched on hrs knee Next I saw the brology teacher DEAN STEVENS complarnmg about his srck hamster Lona Russell the school nurse was trymg to be helpful she was applyrng a toumrquet The two shop teach ers JERRY SATTERLEE and VERNON VAN TASSELL were drscussrng hog feeders and stnce they drdn t recognlze me I wandered into the office I hadn t seen several of my old fnends so I asked PAT MEGGERS and BARBARA SHROYER the offrce g1r1s where they were They told me that GARY MARSHALL DARWIN BLACK GERALD MCCALLEY, RALPH BUSCHER and BILL GROSURTH were professronal basketball players BOB STREMPKE was a famous photographer who was rn Iceland and takmg prctures of polar bears SHIRLEY GOSSE and DONNA HEARN were a song and dance team on Broad way YVONNE PERRY had marrred and wrth her famrly of 13 was lrvmg rn Manchester SHIRLEE BANTZ was breedmg horses on her ranch rn Artzona and was makrng m1ll1ons off them and MARIORIE FRANK was 1n South Afrrca trymg to prevent Jungle rot She was com mg home though because the head hunters made her nervous Just then the bell rang and not wantmg to get trampled to death I left school rmmedrately Later whrle Iwas again seated ln the I H S Express I realrzed to my drsmay that I had left my surtcase at the school Do you s pose they w111 keep lf for me? EC by Marjone Frank Dear Aunt Mrnnre May 8 1952 As the I H S Express chugged mto Independence I grabbed my surtcase and got ready to dash out The tram was engrneered by SHIRLEY HAUTH I saw that she had fmally found a way to let off steam Later as I harled a taxr whrch by the way was drrven by HURLEY BARKOWSKI I kept thmkrng how wonderful rt would be to see all of my old pals agarn As we rode through town I saw that the Dramond Bros Grocery Store was now owned and operated by KENNY COULTER CARLA ALBEKI' hrs wrfe was carryrng a 100 lb bag of Jelly beans poor soul When I got out of the taxr I could hardly belxeve my eyes They had frnally gotten a new hrgh school The S90 000 000 needed to burld rt was grven by the Semor Class of 1952 It was the money that they had left over from therr prom As I walked through the hall I heard a famrlrar vorce sayrng Please check the frne lrst Yes rt was Mrs McLaughl1n and her two able assrstants were BEVERLY ELLIOTT and LORETTA MCINTEER, Everyone rn the d1d understand speech so Mr Hanna who was later replaced by JEAN STEVENS had just kept htm rn school all these years I heard a rousrng march comrng from the band room so I went down to rnvestrgate I was surprrsed to see that BOB HUMMEL was the drrector Because I was downstarrs Ithought that I should see who the phys ed teachers were They tumed out to be NORMAN HAND and MARILYN BEATTY The basketball coach was DON FRANKS and the wrestlrng coach was LAVERN ESCHEN Home ec teacher CAROLE JOHNSON was tellrng her students how to boil water Then I thought I saw B111 the Jamtor but I was wrong It tumed out to be DALE HENDERSON Brll had retrred 20 years ago When I walked through the lower hall I notrced the bulletrn board whrch sard that the prom was gomg to be that Frrday nrght and EDWIN MASTELLER and Hrs Royal Hungartans were gorng to play I also notrced that there was to be an assembly the next hour world famous JOHN KUHL was gorng to lecture on the evrls of lrquor The pnncrpal LOREN EDDY then stepped out of hrs offrce and told me that there was an assembly every day In the background I could hear an announcement berng made on the squawk box by Loren s secretary ZE' MA WALLIS As I went by Mr Mrlls old room I saw ALICE HARRINGTON who was the govem ment teacher tellrng her class that murder IS not a federal offense fT1me to tum the page, Auntrej study hall looked so studious--all except one.
