I ds -nf- It Mr. Bob Taylor's third period Freshman English class experienced an overcrowding problem for the first few days of school in this class of 80 students. Students stand in the crowded lunch lines during fifth hour lunch. Rich Schuman shows his excellence in rushing in a Varsity Football win against South Mountain. Horizon Endures Past Though Horizon High School has existed only a mere four years, it has already distin- guished itself as a school with academic, athletic, and artistic excellence. This repu- tation has been derived over the past four years through dedication, persistence, and overall hard work by the administration, faculty, and students. When Horizon High School first opened in 1980, there were many problems that had to be dealt with. The building was in- complete and supplies were limited. There was no carpeting or ceiling tiles, and for a few days the building was without plumb- ing and air conditioning. Electrical prob- lems continued and caused frequent false fire alarms during most of the first semes- ter. The students had to live without such conveniences as a media center, cafeteria, and other, more spacious, buildings. School opened without enough desks and equipment such as typewriters, which were late in arriving. Everybody had to have pa- tience and wait for things to get settled. Even though every year has its problems, the first year seems to have had the most. Four years later, Horizon is not without beginning of the year problems. The big- gest problem faced in 1983 was overcrowd- ing. With a Freshman class of over 600 people, the assemblies were packed, forc- ing many students to sit on the floor. These large numbers of people also caused larger classes, scheduling problems, a need for more teachers, and a need for many teach- ers to share classrooms. This large group, however, works as an advantage, giving the school more spirit and a greater variety of people. 'As the Class of 1984 graduates, it will be remembered as the last of the originals. The Seniors are the first class to complete all four years, from Freshman to Senior, here at Horizon. ln the past, the graduating classes had to attend Paradise Valley High School. The class of 1984 leaves behind the many traditions that it has helped start. Ev- erything that remains is from hard work and constant dedication. lt is with pride that it can be said. . .lT ALL BEGlNS WITH LIS. Opening 3

Man Traditions Remain While some things have changed over the years, many have stayed the same. Ev- ery morning, 180 days a year, over 2,000 students come to school. Some walk, some drive, others ride the bus, and several even ride their bikes. Physically, there have been few major changes. Even with the gradual landscap- ing and the addition of an auditorium, it looks basically like it did in the beginning. Once inside the building, the same old chore of attending class will never change. There are the same teachers with the addi- tion of a few new ones each year. And of course, Dr. Gleason is always around to keep an eye on everything. One thing that can always be counted on is sports. Every fall, from the beginning of school until about November, there are the weekly football games. As you can see, although the school goes through many changes each year, there are several things which will continue for years. will: 1? 'iv'
