Inexperienced except for one member fDave Cooperj they started their season with last year's best-ever record for Hillsboro casting a shadow across their path, Not allowing this to dampen their spirits, this spunky team went on to tie the school record Q21-10j and go far- ther in state tournament play than any other local team, winning third in the Class M Regional at Flat River, HHS 54-4'7 Doe Run HHS November 14 Hawks won first game of season from Wildcats of Doe Run with Reed contributing 27 points. HHS 45-43 Union HHS November 21 In this hard -fought clash the local Hawks gained a thrill- ing came-from-behind victory over the visiting Union team, HHS 88-53 Bismarck HHS November 25 A savage attack of the basket in a 31-point third quarter gave Hillsboro's undefeated quintet a convincing triumph over the Bismarck team, HHS 55-57 DeSoto December 3 Suffering our first loss of the season in our own invitational toumey at Hillsboro the DeSoto Dragons edged the Hawks by a slight two points in the last quarter. HHS 68-57 Northwest December 4 ln this consolation semi-final, the Hawks blasted the Lions from House Springs 68-57. Ronald Reed hit 21 to take scoring honors, HHS 61-34 Valle of St, Gen. December 6 Winning this game the Hawks clinched the consolation trophy. HHS 43-36 Festus Festus December 16 In this non-conference play the Hawks led all the way as they defeated the Tigers in their own Douglas gym. HHS 39-37 Leadwood Leadwood December 19 Scoring only 8 points in the first half and trailing by 25- 19 at the end of three quarters, Hillsboro was carried to victory by a great defense and a determination to win, The score was 37-all with only 45 seconds to go when Ronald Reed made the final basket to clinch the game. HHS 68-51 Steelville December 23 A 16-4 first quarter served as a springboard to victory as the Hawks disposed of the host school in the first round of the Christmas Tournament at Steelville. HHS 63-43 Bunker December 26 Covering Reed with two and three men, Bunker left Bake- well, Els, and Scott open to shoot from outside and they responded with 43 points between them as the Hawks smothered Bunker in this second game of the tournament. Bakewell, Els, and Scott contributed 19, 14, and 10 points in that order. HHS 52-60 Winona December 27 The first-seeded Winona team grabbed an early lead and then fought off a determined Hillsboro aggregation to HHS 69-49 Festus HHS January 9 Hitting a fantastic percentage from the field in the second stanza, the Hawks scored the ir second victory over the Tigers and won their first conference victory, boosting their season's mark to 11-4. Cooper was high with 23 followed by Scott and Bakewell with 18 and 13 respectively. HHS 65-53 Bourbon Bourbon January 13 Leading by only four points at the half, the Blue and White went on to outscore Bourbon in the second period and insured victory. Dave Cooper lead the pack with 21 points followed by Reed and Els each with 15. Entering the game handicapped by not practicing over an eight-day stretch, the Steighorstmen could not get warmed to the task until late in the quarter and despite a fine finish suffered their fifth loss of the season to go along with 12 victories. HHS 69-63 Pacific January 28 Reserves playing an important part in the victory the Hawks edged past Pacific in the third quarter to stay in contention in the Sullivan Tourney. Dave Cooper, fouling out with four minutes to go, had one of his most productive nights, rack- ing 25 points. HHS 71 -55 Cherryville January 30 Grabbing a first-quarter lead the Hawks easily stayed on top the rest of the way to win the con- solation trophy at this tournament. HHS 56-73 Fox HHS February 6 Battling hard as the hot-shooting Fox team broke a close game wide open in the final four minutes the Hawks, nevertheless, had to accept defeat. Els paced the losers with 17. HHS 63-52 Valley Park HHS February 10 Bright spots in this sloppily-played game were the performances of reserves, Moss and Douglas. The Hawks were bothered by the team from Valley Park but, nonetheless, won by 11 points. HHS 59-58 Caledonia Caledonia February 11 went to Scott with 23 points, followed by Els with 16 and Reed with 13.
