The story you are about to read is true. Only your glasses should be changed to pro- tect your eyes. My name is George Mullins. I’m a cop. I work out of No. 13 on the hoot owl shift. At 1:01 on December 31, 1969, Chief Jerry M. called me into his office. He told me to have a seat, at 1:03 D.A. Ralph H. arrived. The chief briefed me on the situation. U.S. Sec. to the Treas., Bill A., was suspected of defrauding the government of about a million a week. The chief just wanted me to get the facts. It was suspected that Anderson’s sec., Mary M., was getting most of the benefits of the loot. In turn. Miller’s sec., Charles D., all at once began to drive Cadillacs and buy his sec., minks. I hopped a cab down to Ciros. The cab driver, Margie S., a retired wrestler, pulled up to a screech- ing halt in front of the joint. I was glad that ride was over. I just wanted the facts, not a funeral. I stepped through the door and the bouncer, Trulah E., without a giggle, asked me if I were old enough to come in. I flashed my badge and said, I just want the facts, mam.” I stared around the room. The cigarette girls, Dolores R., Miss Chop Suey of 1968, Betty B., ex-Martin Bomberette, and Rachel D., were all lingering close to the table of Jake B. and Joe M., recent multi-millionaire oil men. I sauntered over to the proprietress, Lillian C., and began to question her. She said it was time for the floor show. I ordered a shot of Red eye.” As the bartender, Margaret B., poured it, the floor show began. The orchestra, directed by Lois E., heralded the entrance of the unsurpassa- ble opera singer, Patsy K. After her rendition of Figero,” the incomparable impersona- tor, Louise B., gave a series of imitations, ending with Minnie Pearl. The audience held its breath as Carroll E. and Dolly H. Edwards and Sons did the most pulsative trapeze act of the new era. As the stage was cleared for the next act, I glanced around the room. At 2:07, everything seemed so so; nothing suspicions. Over in one corner, Fayne E. and companion Shirley H., Oscar winners for their performances in ’Romeo and Juliet,” were lighting cigarettes with $100 bills. At the next table, K.R.S., inventor of a new and fast way to age” liquor, sat with Retha M., Patsy O., and Madge E. All three were old maids but still in there pitching. Aha! there he was! The fellow I was looking for. I asked him his name. He said his name was Kenneth O’Quinn. I asked him where he got all his dough. ’’Shootin’ pool, ” he replied. The show began again and in the confusion, my man got away. I decided to watch the show before I went after him. Chorus girls, Sally M., Evelyn Y., Shirley E. and Glechia M., supplemen- ted the dance number of Leamond R., new Fred Astaire, and Betty O., Grable’s success- or. I liked the costumes on the chorus girls. I moved closer. I wanted to get the facts. Then Joyce F., Susie S., Joyce T., and Rose H., played musical instruments that they had devised and named. They had a ukitar, a saxiano, a manjo and a viokiphone. On my way out I bumped into a couple of my friends from the press. Gene Y., and Mary P. They were writing an article on the life of a married T.V. actress and using as examples, Lois A., Lucille B., and Nancy B. I bought a paper at the corner and read the headlines. Joel T., head of the poultry dept., of the U.S., said he had devised a method to get hens to lay eggs already scrambled, feed them Mix-Masters. When I got back to the office, ace detective, Jim C. already had O’Quinn. I asked Jim’s sec., Peggy S., where he had caught O’Quinn. In the poolroom,” she said. I went to see the chief. The D.A. was with him .They were congratulating Church. Chief snarled at me. Fine way to start a new year, ” he said. I just tried to get the facts,” I replied. 24 —
