' T0 THE CLASS OF 1943: Todays difficulties call for the finest type of citizenship we have ever exhibited. Faith in one's fellow human beings, courage in the face of danger and trouble, and an endurance and stamina to meet and over- come obstacles are required. We can, we must, we will provide for a future more Christian than the past. Each and every one of us has his or her most important contribution to make. I like the spirit of the lol- lowing poem: Well, son, l'll tell you: Life for me hasn't been no crystal stair! It's had tacks in it, And splinters, Boards tom up, Places with no carpet on the floor. lust bare .... But all the time l've been a climbin' on- Reachin' lan-din's, Turnin' corners, Sometimes goin' on Where there hasn't been no light at all .... So, boy, don't you turn back! Don't you sit down on the steps 'Cause you find the goin' hard. Look at me, honey: l'se still a-goin', l'se still a-clirnbin', And life for me hasn't been no crystal stair. From THE DREAM KEEPER AND OTHER POEMS Supervising Principal. By Langston Hughes 8

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1943: There are many pessimists who will be glad to give you advice, to tell you that this is the most unhappy and unfortunate time ever to be graduated from high school. The immediacy of the war limits their perspective. But beyond the horizon you will find unprecedented opportu- nities, or why should we be engaged in war? If the way seems hard, remember that adversity toughens and that: When the oak is straining in the wind, The trunk sends down a deeper root on the windward side. ZWQWA
