1986-1987 will be best remembered for its music. This year saw the rebirth of many rock veterans. Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, and Steve Winwood all had Grammy Award winning albums. We also witnessed the rebirth of the Monkees minus Mike Nesmith and Boston’s reappearance with the amazing album “Third Stage”. Bon Jovi stormed the country with the “Slippery When Wet” album and tour. Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, and Van Halen with Sammy Hagar as lead singer, continued their success while groups like the Beastie Boys and Run D.M.C. rapped their way into our Uves HA Rock artists continued to show their altruism by participating in the Am-International concert so as to free American prisoners in foreign c“ IA c Wmmsm Compact discs became more popular. Many groups began producing CD’s, tvnA?r h m ,h B'a,l“ Jj More entertainment was provided by both television and film. We laughed at series like “The Cosby Show” and “Moonlighting” and cheered for Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. Platoon touched all of America’s hearts with its humanistic view of the cruel Vietnam War. International headlines carried news of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the U.S.S.R. This was the worst nuclear accident in world history.

On the local scale, scandals rocked New York City. The Parking Violations Bureau was the target of an investigation involving corruption at the highest levels. ft ■ Yf CU «■ On Wall Street, Ivan Boesky divulged his participation in the Insider Trading scandal. i tu s K New York State prosecuted many members of major crime families charging them with running a murderous criminal conspiracy. AIDS continued to dominate the media as Llberace and Rock Hudson fell victim to the disease. lilt - i Surrogate motherhood became the topic of much attention as Mary Beth Whitehead attempted to gain custody of Baby “M”. The New York area enjoyed a great year in sports. Both the New York Mets and the New York Giants dominated their game and ultimately won the World Series and Super Bowl, respectively. k y New York again was the scene of much jubilation as the Statue of Liberty’s 100th birthday was celebrated. The evening culminated with the unveiling of the newly restored statue and the lighting of her torch, amid an unforgettable fireworks display. be a year to be remembered. 199
