The National Defence Act of 1916 established ROTC programs in high schoo1's throughout the United States. ln 1919 Joseph P. Nourse is credited with the organization of Jtmior ROTC units in the San Francisco High Schools. Joseph P. Nourse was Galileo High 1School's first principal when Ir. ROTC was first started in this school on Pgugust 1, 1921, At that time 153 Galileo stud- ents were receiving ROTC training. ln 1964 our enrollment is up to 240 cadets, the highest enrollment in the Jr. ROTC program in the San Francisco High Schools. The Ir. ROTC pregram is intended to train boys for leadership and responsible citizenship. These are two of the most important qualities which one should a- chieve in school. ROTC gives cadets the satisfaction that occurs from team sports. It regards individual excellence in both academic and mechanical proficiency, such as becoming an expert rifleman or a member of the drill team. There are many programs at Galileo which offer students opportunities to practice leader- ship. ROTC extends these opportunities. There have been many cadets in ROTC Dennis Tsai Battalion Commander. who have been tops in sports and school service while at the same served as ROTC leaders. ROTC has performed a great service to the school in many ways. Cadets are ushers at all commencement exercises of graduating Galileo students. The Galileo ROTC Battalion' has been reviewed in Parades and Ceremonies by many R O T 6 top-ranking military and civic officials. lr.
