Sherman Qthird from leftj joins GEN Douglas McArthur and ADM William Halsey on board the USS MISSOURI as ADM Chester Nimitz signs the Japanese surrender document on September 2, 1945. NAMESAKE FORREST PERCIVAL SHERMAN was born in Merrimack, New Hampshire on October 10, 1896, the son of Frank James and Grace Allen Sherman. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy second in the class of 1918 f199 membersy and was commissioned an Ensign on June 1917. He served in the Mediterranean during World War I, and was Commanding Officer of the carrier WASP in World War II when that ship saw action against the Japanese in the Solomon Islands. Admiral Sherman received his Navy wings at Naval Air Station, Pensacola. He was decorated with the Navy Cross, the distinguished service medal, the legion of merit, and the Purple Heart Qfor Wounds received aboard WASPJ, to mention just a few of this great individual's honors. His career was dynamic: He held many positions from combat arenas to key staff positions. As a result of his keen sense of duty and his hard work, he became the youngest man to serve as Chief of Naval Operations, beginning on November 3, 1949. On this date' he was also appointed admiral at a relatively young 53 years of age. He was on a military diplomatic tour of Europe seeking to strengthen America's ties with its allies when he died on 22 July, 1951.
