January, many thought that the Dutchman hopes went with him, but junior Charley Donovan, although only five feet six inches tall, filled Bill's shoes admirably. His fancy dribbling and excellent playmaking ability helped the team win its remaining games. In addition to Bill and Charley, Bob Lawrence, Ron Snow, Len Tobin, and soph Marty Goldstein excelled. The most exciting games of the year were the last five. In the final contest of the regular season, the Erasmus cagers came from behind to tie Wingate and go on to win in over- time. The same happened in the first playoff game against Jefferson at Madison Square Garden. The Commerce and Coltunbus victories also required last quarter spurts. In the final game, played with Franklin K. Lane High School for first place honors, the score see-sawed until Bob Lawrence sank two foul shots, minutes before the end of the game. Coach Bernard Kirsner is very proud of the P.S.A.L. tour- nament this season, and hopes that next year's team, sparked by Charley Donovan, Len Tobin and Marty Goldstein, will do equally well. BASKETBALL Genuine enthusiasm, outstanding individual playing and excellent teamwork were chiefly responsible for Erasmus' first P.S.A.L. basketball championship in thirteen years. The Dutchmen went undefeated this season, the only team in the city to do so. Each team in our league was van- quished twice by Erasmus and three favored squads were out-scored by our hoopsters in the playoffs. Erasmus was fortunate in having Bill Cunningham, the All-City center. Leading the team to victory in the first fif- teen games, Bill broke court, team, and league scoring rec- ords, averaging 34.8 points a game. The gentle pitter-patter of not so little feet often heard outside our Windows could be traced directly to the Erasmus Hall track team. Neither summer's heat nor winter's cold stopped these stoical athletes in their training. Track team members have been known to cover the 220 yards from the Administration Building to the Bedford Arch in less than 30 seconds during practice, easily outdistancing even the student late for an English test. The track schedule was rough, and training had to be grueling. There were outdoor meets in the fall and spring, and indoor competitions in the winter. The efforts of coach Mel Heichman and his runners more than paid off, however. For the first time in more than twenty years, the harriers won the Brooklyn Cross-Country championship. Individual honors were also copped by Erasmus, as cross-country cap- tain Tony Hasbourne placed first in the borough. In the Mayoris meet, our 880-yard relay team placed a respectable fifth in a field of 75 of the top teams in the New York area. Our fine athletes competed in the high jump, shot put, TRACK AND CRDSS-COUNTRY TRACK SCHEDULE CROSS COUNTRY hurdles, and pole vault as well as in the sprints and distance 'running events in these and other meets. Captains Mel White and Dennis Dyce helped keep the team functioning smoothly. 1961 was certainly a banner year for the track stars of Erasmus Hall. The average Erasmian, in fact, could hardly keep track of the team's accomplish- ments.
