J Ur IORS L ef! I0 High!-J. liaton, N. Ace J. McCarry, N. Walters, Mr Stem. Junior Class llistory On September 7, 1950 the class of 1953 en- tered the doors of the East Stroudsburg Senior High School for the first time. It was rough goin for a while with those horrible seniors heckiing us, and the first activity the Sophs participated in was the Sophomore Initiation. Those sophomore football players made wonder- ful chorus girls, didn't they? After things had settled down a bit, we elected our class officers. President, John Eaton, vice-president, John Arnstg secretary, Pat lrlartzellg treasurer, John fVlcGarry. As sophomores, we held the Shoulder Pad Fling in honor of the football team. We also made history with our minstral show Carolina Shindign which was a terrific success. Before we knew it the end of the year loomed in sight, and we elected the class officers for our junior year. Pres., John Eaton, Vice-pres., John NlcCarryg secretary, Norma Aceg treas., Nancy Walters. We came back to school on September 6 as much wiser and experienced juniors. Our first activity of the year was our Turkey Trot on December 8. Then on January 17, we put on the hilarious production, One Mad Night, which was a box-office hit. On May 9, we held our Junior Prom to bid farewell to the seniors. Now we are seniors and hope to have an even more successful year than the past two. MEMBERS OF THF JUNIOR CLASS B. Dawson, W. The next few weeks were one mad confusion, but before long we became accustomed to the new teachers, new subjects, new classmates, and new re lations, Sophomore regulations. A few weeks Jgter we leamed the meaning of the term, Little Sophomoresf' through the rigors of that democratic institution, the initiation. When the matter of a student constitution came up, our class plunged whole-heartedly into it and adopted it by a nearly unanimous vote. ln the mean-time individual students have been busy. There are a large number of Sophomores in every activity from band to chorus, including Chess Club, Hi-Lite Club, Hifle Club, the Y organizations, and our football, basketball, and baseball teams. The football team roster is swelled by these sophomores: J. Anthony, W. Butz, B. Fish, B. Hartman, B. Hartman, D. Herman, B. Rogers, F. Summa and S. Boorstien. Junior Class Play The eve of January Seventeenth found the lfast Stroudsburg Junior High School auditorium filled to its capacity with an audience eagerly awaiting the rising of the curtain on the annual junior play. 'lihis year's production, One Vlad- Night was enthusiastically received. Backstage, the excited cast was kept busy checking and rechecking their stage properties, tricky lines and cues, hoping that in the hours to come their weeks of hard work would be vin- dicated. The action of the play takes place in One Nlad Night, and what a crazy night it is. We have worked hard learning music, selling everything imaginable, and then taking time out to present the very successful Christmas concert, the colorful operetta, Pick- les , and competing in Forensics. 'llhe climax of our musical year was the annual spring con- cert, a terrific combination of both the band and choruses. 'lihe most exciting addition to the choruses this year is the new purple gowns and white stoles. Although they haven't arrived yet, we're hoping they will very soon so we can show them off before the public. It is the duty of the Student Council to serve the student body and to discuss various activities around the school which the student body deems of high importance. This organization has been greatly strengthened by a new constitution ratified on January 10, 1952 by 942 of the student body. This constitution has a very democratic Student Bill of Hights and provides for a judiciary. Through this new gov- emment, student control of all activities and a large part of the discipline may be developed. This will be achieved by careful planning and complete cooperation. Cvx MAJORETTES A touch of genius and hours of hard prac- tice are the two major qualities of our major- ettes. Learning to twirl a baton early in life, they acquired the touch of genius with- out much trouble. Some of them took private lessons and others learned in the Baton Club. After years of fumbling and tumbling with the baton, the girls finally became the polished twirlers that they now are. The majorettes practice with the band two and three times a week when the weather is nice for marching. Otherwise, they brush up on their twirling in the gymnasium. FOOTBALL This year East Stroudsburg completed its most successful season since football was in- augurated in 1945. l'iastburg's potential powerhouse started slowly, losing its opener to Slatington 20-13, despite a second half surge by the Cavaliers. The purple and white gridders then journeyed to Weona Park to play Pen Argyl. Even though the Cavaliers knotted the score in the third quarter, they lost another close decision, 12-6. The first night game of the year brought a cocky Bangor crew to town. The Slaters ex- pected an easy win but, instead, were drubbed by Fiastburg's powerful ground attack, 13-0. Next on the Cavalier's list of victims was 1.ehighton's Indians. The purple and white piled up a 25-O first half lead and coasted to its second straight victory. havored for the first time since the series began, lfast Stroudsburg met their arch rivals from Stroudsburg under the lights at Giffels Field. A record crowd saw the best inter-boro contest since the series began, as an underdog 54 Mountaineer eleven edged the Cavaliers by a 15-14 score. liebounding from the heart-breaking loss to Stroudsburg, the Cavaliers rolled over a favored Wilson High aggregation, 25-6. Led by captain Nlartz and Dick Merring Eastburg piled up 13 points at half-time while holding their opponents scoreless during the first half. Fresh from an upset victory over Wilson the purple and white gridders ran over a rough Coplay bunch 48-T. Dick Nlerring racked up two T.D.'s on his brilliant running. Eastburg, with a shot at the Lehigh-North- ampton League Title at stake, met Nazareth High, an annual powerhouse and perennial league titleholder, the the season's finale. The rugged Blue Devils grabbing every opportunity, halted lfastburg's pennant aspirations, handing the Cavaliers a 27-6 setback. This game brought to close lfast Strouds- bur 'S most successful season in its short foot- balThistory. :a,,A I , -xx i' 1 ,. ,. 131- ,. f' , ! ..,. .- E ' ' 'iv 'fi 31,1 is '11 4 9, 1,13 0 4 wr. BASKETBALL The 1952 edition of Purple and White net- men was under the guidance of a new coach, Mr. Dick Forster. As this issue went to press, the Cavaliers have just completed the first half competition in the Lehigh-Northampton League. They compiled a four and four record which was good enough for fifth place in the nine team oop. ln the first inter-boro contest, played at Stroudsburg, the court Cavaliers dropped a nip and tuck affair. Stroudsburg came from behind to take a 39-38 decision in the last few seconds. Eastburg was led by Big Ray Steele, six- three Cavalier center, who averaged 20 points per game and also was one of the league's out- standing rebounders. Due to his fine all around play, Ray was practically a sure bet for All- League honors. BASKETBALL This year's squad was composed of a group of inexperienced sophs and three juniors. The team gave a good account of themselves and provided Eastburg fans with many thrills - and spills. Coach Cregory's young charges played good hall and won their share of ball games as well as losing several tight contests. The squad was large this year and it is hoped that it will provide next year's Varsity with several up and coming prospects. Among these are Clarence Hineline, ex-Y League star, Don Her- man, dependahle performer, and Bernie Fish, high-scoring guard. These boys, and others, will carry Eastburg's colors in future years. All hands up and around we go. Nazareth proves to be a pretty tough team. Big Ray Steele displays brilliant playing with the help of teamates Miller and Tred- innick. Our J. BASEBALL For the first time in several years, the dia- mond Cavaliers enjoyed a winning season.Paced by Ra Steele and his able right arm, Eastburg compiiled a record of four wins, three losses, and one tie. Due to scheduling difficulties the boys failed to take the measure of Stroudsburg as the game was not played. The club featured good hitting by Harold Speedy Litts, Leon Albert, Bud Steele, Girard Rodgers, and John Juice Amst. The season ended on a highly successful note as Juice , titanic first-saclcer, clubbed the team's only home run in the last ame.
