Munyan, Advisor Mrs. Marga Talarsky, Business Advisor A Member of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association NINETEEN HUNDRED Table of Contents Volume IV Limited Edition AND SIXTY-FIVE East Brunswick High Grew This Year . . East Brunswick High School grew this year, achieving a stature and vitality which exceeded the limits of the buildings. While the capacity of the physical plant was being supplemented by bricks and beams, the capacities of our minds and hearts were being supplemented by new ideas and endeavors. The rich bounty of our high school years embodied hopes and dreams as varied and inspiring as the many-hued leaves of autumn, friendships as warm as shafts of sun to soften the briskness of our winter youth, and memories—not just tokens of our yesterdays but promises for our to- morrows. Seniors, who came to East Brunswick High, when it was still a-building six years ago, returned to the campus in September to find they had come full cycle. The construction crews were at it again. When school opened in September, con- struction of the additions to the cafeteria, gym and Arts Building and of the new academic building was well under way. The school population grew with the ar- rival of a freshman class of more than 500 . . . and with the advent of an army of construction workers. Some areas of the campus were tempor- arily off limits . . . except to those who moved the earth, erected new walls and otherwise helped in building a better school. 5 . . . But Student Life Went on Some students still arrived late... 6 The way to the next class often in- volved a detour . . . Around the Construction . . . And. for a time, lunch was a sandwich from home in homeroom. Class rings still arrived in October, soon to be worn on chains around the necks of pretty girls . . . Fall Brought Sports . . . and New Friends Amid the riotous colors of autumn and a long Indian summer, enthusiastic students attended pep rallies, track meets, and football games . . . yet team members sometimes found time to be alone in the lengthening shadows when long afternoon practices had come to an end. The complexities of the modern world re- quired that we learn the sciences... While our desires for self-expression dic- tated that we master the arts. Shop courses provided us with vocational training and skills for worthwhile activi- ties in our leisure. The need for exercise and a well-rounded program of physical activity was provided in our gym classes. We Resumed Our Studies . . . 10 And Explored New Ideas We probed the secrets of the uni- verse in advanced laboratories. In the sciences . . . the arts . . . . . . and on the playing fields, we pondered old questions and raised a few new ones. Often we discovered the answers but occasionally we had to be told. In Scholarship . . . Brian McCall and Alice Ahlgren In Student Government . . . Joe Zanctti and Gor- don Beecher In Publications . .. Kathy . . . and Followed These Leaders In Sports . . . Kathy McGuire 15 Winter . . Though the bitter wind of winter drove us indoors, basketball games and wrestling matches freed our spirits. The Christmas Dance, the twinkling tree, the stained glass windows ... all put us in the holiday mood. And then the snow fell and brought the scrape of shovels, the cancelled classes, the snowballs, and sledding down the school hill in the tingling darkness of a winter night. 16 . . . Melted into Spring Hardly had the snows gone when the crack of the bat was heard in the land. And with the coming of Spring, a rising anticipation of the end of our high school careers. ... And Suddenly the Year Was Gone It ended in a flash, gone in a whirl of proms and parties, cramming for finals and signing of yearbooks. It vanished in the fun of Culvermere, the formality of the Senior Prom, the nervousness of Awards Night, and the solemnity of Commencement. 18 Ahead of us lay college and pro- fessional training, military service and employment, marriage and the family. Yet part of us would always remain “on the hill” . . . faithful, proud, and loyal. Thomas R. Bowman SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS B.S.. Ball State College M.A.. Ball State College Ph.D, University of Chicago The Superintendent’s Message The notion that learning goes on inside school and living goes on outside school is all too common in our society. This misleading notion is often combined with the equally misleading one that learning is preparation for life. I say these state- ments are misleading because each is true but each is also a gross over-simplification of a complex situation. For example, to say that a nuclear explosion is hot is a true statement but it also grossly understates the extreme heat of the reaction. Learning, rather than preparation for life, is one of the major concerns of living men. Recent statistics with respect to occupations suggest that most of the young citizens graduating from high school at the present time will be forced by obsolescence of practices of techniques or materials to make at least one major change in occupa- tion during their lifetimes. This means that learning is a must if these people are to survive as functioning citizens. But man cannot stop living while he is learning. He must constantly learn new patterns of responses even while he is still using the old, for the world about him changes and no man can know what he may need to know. And if no man can know what he may need to know, then he cannot arrange to do all his learning in the relatively safe confines of the school. In fact, it may well be that the most important “thing that can be learned in school is how to continue learning from the living of life itself. If we abide with the notion that the saying “live and learn” is a challenge that all of us can meet in our own way and at our own pace, we will not be dismayed by the immensity of the task of knowing all that is worth while in our expanding sea of knowledge. A “little bit of knowledge” is not a dangerous thing if the man who holds it knows that it is a little bit and is willing to seek more. Be a seeker for more! 20 These Men Established Policies . . . The Principal’s Message The world in 1965—the world we know today—is a much smaller one than the world our fathers knew. The great expanses of distance and space have been shrunk considerably during the last fifty years, and Science promises greater progress in that direction. The peoples of the worlds and the planets of outer space—for pur- poses of peace or of war—have been drawn closer together in time via the new methods of transportation. Yet, we find that neither the peoples of the varied na- tions of the world nor the people of our United States nor even neighbors who live side by side in a community have made nearly as good progress in lessening the psychological distances between man and man. The challenges of science, medicine, and transportation are being met: the details of diplomacy and government arc being dealt with; yet the individual’s right to be free, to be “friend,” to be successful have few standard bearers. It is in this area of human relationships and human relations that each man has the opportunity to promote progress which will help secure peace at home and abroad. Let each man help his brother find personal liberty and he will preserve his own. Let each man live in the spirit of freedom, by the precepts of freedom, and freedom shall survive. If we are a world whose people arc being brought closer together, let us also be a world bound in friendship, respect, and understanding, rather than one of hate, fear, and suspicion. Let all people cease working country against country to build bombs, and commence working country with country, man with man, to build Broth- erhood. Anthony J. But the three tasks of the COURIER, to publish news of general campus interest ... to stimulate the students to an awareness of campus affairs . . . and reflect campus opinion, have been well challenged and achieved, carrying on one of the most im- portant traditions of the Green and White. STANDING: Joni O’Neill, Cathy Pellichcro, Ange- la Sgrio, Valerie Kluska, Randy Alberte, Ina Neidich, Holly Wideman, and Vicki Wilson. Green and White Week sponsored by the Student Council, is organized to bol- ster school spirit and gain en- thusiasm on the part of the students. Some of the activi- ties of the week were: Catch the Killer contest, Theme Day, No Homework Night, and Green and White Day Sports events were also fea- tured during the week. The fun festive week was conclud- ed by a Twirp Dance. GREEN AND WHITE WEEK RUTGERS CONCERT The famous Rutgers Uni- versity Glee Club presented a concert on January 8th. About 60 men in number, the club presented a program of medieval songs to modern folk music and ended with a selection of traditional col- lege songs. Afterwards a re- ception was held in the cafe- teria where light refresh- ments were served. This be- gan a traditional evening of music, that will be sponsored annually by the yearbook. JUNIOR PROM “Bah Hat” Couples stop to chat near the palm trees. One of the highlights of our Junior year was “Bali Hai.” Preparation for the Junior Prom began months in advance and the excitement mounted as the final plans were completed. Exotic foods sheltered by grass huts and nearby palm trees echoed the theme of “Bali Hai”; while soft music and dim lights provided a romantic at- mosphere for all those who attended. Angela Sgroi and Mike Vail taste the delicious refreshments catered by Mrs. Wagner. Wooden monkeys, programs, and corsages served as momentos of a wonderful eve- ning. Soft music and dim lights provided a perfect atmosphere for a romantic evening. Victories on the playing field were matched by the outstanding halftime shows that featured the band, drill team and twirlers, presentations that were second to none. SUMMING UP THE SEASON: Some We Won, Others We Lost . Our Opponents Knew We’d Been There There’s nothing really profound in the statement that when two teams play, one is going to lose. East Brunswick High took its losses this year, but it also took some notable victories, too, both on the team and on the individual level. The important thing was that, win or lose, we let our opponents know we had been there. Every game was played for the win. There was no crying in defeat. In so conducting ourselves on the play- ing fields, we have grown ... in our knowledge of our capabilities and our limitations, in our capacity to withstand the hcadiness of success and the disap- pointment of defeat. We have, through sports, become more adult and have earned the increased respect and admira- tion of those who fought against us. In that sense, EBHS never lost at all. DAVID B.
