We will remember your patience with our mistakes and your willingness to help us work out our problems. Year after year you have proved that learning can be fun. Your humor, fairness, and your hard work make you the great teacher that you are. To show our appreciation, we, the Senior Class of 1968, proudly dedicate this edition of the Cavalcade to rs. Jfifcfa ( JIC. life C Cee t Nineteen sixty-eight has been eventful for Drexel High School due largely to the efforts of the administration. Our principal Mr. Harry Hallyburton has been hard at work keeping the school running smoothly. Aided by the Assistant Principal, Merlin Shull, Mr. Hallyburton has overseen the Student Council and done the endless paper work required of them. Others are necessary to making the school an efficient working body. Mrs. Margaret Eply and Mrs. Effie Hester have served as secretaries for students and teach¬ ers, as well as Mr. Hallyburton. The sen¬ iors owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Reep and Mrs. Gregory for their aid in helping to decide what after graduation! In Mor- ganton, Mr. John L. Johnson has done the difficult job of overseeing the Burke County School System. Recognition also goes to the School Board for the time they have given to Drexel High School. MR. HALLYBURTON MRS. EPLEY MR. JOHNSON MRS. REEP MR. SHULL EFFIE HESTER Senior Glass Officers Seniors will soon leave the security of D. H. S. and enter the world of adults. For the past twelve years they have prepared and anticipated for this momentous event, but now feel a twinge of sad¬ ness at the thought of leaving. As the Seniors gaze into the memoirs of their high school years, they also look forward-to the future. Here the Class Officers - Pam Murphy, Secretary; James Davis, Treasurer; Jerry Byrd, President; Alvin Ballard, Vice President - look at old annuals and relive their days at Drexel High School. That brought the number up to eighteen; and when ties resulted in two categories, the total number of Superlatives be¬ came twenty. We proudly present the Superlatives from our senior class. - As Mike and Rachel always say, Friends go better with Coke. - Dennis and Pam reveal the secret of their popularity as Dennis helps Pam out. - You meet the nicest people on a Honda, and such nice people as Denna and Alvin are bound to succeed. - Some people really know how to study and have fun at the same time - tcwbad about James and Sarah. - Even such great athletes as Susan and Bill have tough breaks - but that ' s the way the ball bounces. - Rain, hail, lightening, thunder, Cathy, and Randy won ' t go under. - When there isnāt a man around, Linda should be. Coach Shull displays some of the disci¬ pline that has made him successful as a teacher and coach. This probably brings back memories of Pork Chop Hill. What ' ya say Coach? Much knowledge is needed to teach boys the principles of wood-working. Mr. Wright teaches his boys everything except keep your eye on the blade. Thumbs up, Mr. Wright! Given: Mr. Hollifield teaches several difficult subjects. Proven; Many of his stu¬ dents learn a great deal. Therefore: Mr. Hollifield is a good teacher. Reason; The Good Teacher Postulate. Biology proves to be one of the most in¬ teresting and informative courses, thanks to the dedication and devotion of Mrs. Mc- Neely. The English department was recently ex¬ panded with the addition of Mrs. McCall. She teaches Advanced English and devotes much of her time to dramatics at Drexel. Mrs. McNeil apparently has the undi¬ vided of all of her students. Undoubtedly someone is being sliced by the Master of the Cutdown. The use of visual aids is important to the modern school of today, says Hippy Hemphill. The economics and history teacher manages to keep all his classes fascinating. One of the largest obstacles one must overcome when teaching subjects of the complexity of Physics, Advanced Math, and Geometry is keeping the studentsā at¬ tention. The ever-popular and entertain¬ ing Mr. Robinson has this problem solved. Another mainstay of our science pro¬ gram is Mrs. Powell. She is sometimes careless with acid, but nevertheless en¬ lightens each student to the wonders of Chemistry and Physical Science. Our fine library is capably maintained by Mrs. Abernethy. She spends many long hours taking care of books and collecting fines. Another fairly new teacher is Mr. Cooper. He teaches Graphic Arts and handles most of the printing chores for Burke County. His afternoons are spent coaching. Mrs. Westbook seems to be indoctrinat¬ ing her pupils on Communism and propa¬ ganda, but she is still able to instruct them in correct English. Mrs. Clark teaches half of the business courses at Drexel High. Her shorthand, typing, and business classes give many stu¬ dents good foundations for college or busi¬ ness school. Mr. Franklin works so hard at times that he can hardly keep his eyes open for the next class. He helps many students work and go to school at the same time. Mrs. Cates shares the business duties with Mrs. Clark. Here she shows the proper fin¬ ger position for her Typing I students. Mrs. Hollifield educates her girls in and out of school. She supplements her class and kitchen instruction with many trips. Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Gregory chat in the hall as they plan their strategy for the com¬ ing day. Both spend many hours in guidance of students. Drexel boasts of one of the finest bands around due mainly to the efforts of our mus ic and chorus teacher. Miss Siphers. Mrs. Stover has spent many years to the betterment of students. She currently heads the French Department and advises both the French Club and the Beta Club. tgKr jGUi - Mr. Dean Clark These young people are preparing an educational fou ndation which will be relied upon during their high school years. In the near future they will be making important decisions that will influence their lives. Since the high school routine is somewhat different, the 8th grade changes classes 3 times a day to adjust them to high school. They are looking forward to the challenges which will face them as freshmen. Mrs. Curlee ā¢Ā«s aĀ« i 00 SOU S!$TĀ£ TRUE COURSE Mrs. Bolick Mrs. Blank i TvCfial mat ā i f ; . The willingness to work and follow instructions has caused Denna Franklin, Dawn Franklin, Jerry Byrd, Murphy Frye, and Julia Browning to aid in the steady in¬ crease in the size and quality of the annual. Earlier this year, the annual staff was aided by the progressive thinking of Mrs. Maxine McCall. After countless hours of work, we of the 1968 CAVALCADE staff hope that all those who read this annual enjoy these fruits of our labor. CLASS EDITORS Julia Browning Jerry Byrd The Creators of your 1968 CAVALCADE ā ā¦ā Randy Digh and Janis Sharp, Editor and Co-Editor of the paper, brought many new ideas to the WOL¬ VERINE SCENE. The Graphic Arts Department helped out with this new and different paper. Pictures were used for the first time due to the facilities of the Graphic Arts department. An advice to the lovelorn column was added. All the other departments were enlarged and improved. Randy and Janis are looking over their first edition of THE WOLVERINE SCENE. This year the Future Homemakers of America, under the guidance of Mrs. Lena Hollifield, continued to be one of the most active clubs in the school. President, Sarah Abernethy, oversaw the girls as they worked to make F.H.A. a better club. Cook book sale, the many guest speakers, and the trip to Western Carolina Center, highlighted the events of the year. The F.T.A. has had many meetings since school opened last fall. The officers were elected at the first meeting. One purpose of the F.T.A. is to help the students decide if they want to go into the teaching profession. They have programs pertaining to the importance of teaching. In its pioneer year at Drexel High School, the Industrial Arts Club has contributed much to the activities of its members and the school. The Student Council of Drexel had the privilege this year of travelling to a newly consolidated high school at Waynesville, N.C. Drexel hopes to consolidate in the future and have such facilities as the spa¬ cious library pictured above. Other advantages of Tuscola High School were the width of the halls and the size of the classrooms. The lockers were recessed from the main portion of the hall and did not interfere with student traffic. Members of the Tuscola Student Council and some of the teachers conducted the tour and explained details to the visitors.
