Determined to Graduate While hundreds of people were enjoying themselves during the Delaware Raft Race at the Delaware Family Campground, a terrible tragedy happened to one Dover High School student. About twenty miles from the Delaware Water Gap, on a hot day in June 1984, Tim Orchard was at first also having fun swimming and joking around with friends. As he lunged forward in knee deep water to “dunk” a friend, the accident happened. Tim hit the bottom of the river. When he came up, he was floating face down in the water. Tim was not moving. Acting quickly Tim’s sister and Joe Quigley, a friend, pulled him out of the river. The victim was then transported by ambulance to the Poconos Hospital where he stayed for several hours. Later, he was transported by helicopter to Morristown Memorial Hospital where one and one half months were spent in mental and physical recuperation. Unfortunately, Tim’s mobility has never been regained. He is known as a “C6-7 quad” since he broke the sixth and seventh vertebrae in his neck. He continues to go to the Kessler Institute in West Orange several times a week for rehabilitation. Despite his disability, Tim has overcome many obstacles and is now determined to graduate from Dover High School.
