The College seal illustrates this idea very simply - a telescope surmounted by a liberty cap, and both supported by the open Bible, with the motto Pietate et Doctrina Tuta Libertas. For religion and learning are indeed the bulwarks of liberty. They protect it from contempt and ignorance and restrain it from irresponsibility. . What is especially interesting here is the nature of liberty's guardians. They 1 are not human institutions.
