, Captain orman .Kaufman Captain Norman L. Kaufman was born on 31 May 1927 in New York, New York. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1948. Prior to reporting to active duty in the Navy in 1950 he served aboard the U.S. Army Transport General Edwin D. Patrick. His sea assignments include duty in the USS LSM 398, USS KITTIWAKE, USS BLUE, USS HALEg he commanded the radar picket ship USS CALCATERRA and the destroyer USS LAFEEY, and was executive officer of the heavy cruiser USS SAINT PAUL. His shore assignments included duty as Head, Mobilization Plans Section of the Bureau of Naval Personnel and Head, Destroyer and Cruiser Warfare Section in the Surface Warfare Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He has attended the General Line Curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School and the Armed Forces Staff College. Immediately prior to reporting to USS DETROIT he completed the one year resident course at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He has been awarded a degree of Master of Science in Administration from the George Washington University. Among his awards are the Bronze Star and Navy Commendation Medal, both with Combat VH, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnamese Navy Distinguished Service Order, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation. He is married to the former Edith Ceisler of Forest Hills, New York. The couple reside in Middletown, Rhode Island with their three children - Ruth 15, Iudy 14, and David 11.

ommander arl . aster r. Carl L. Master, jr. was born June 2, 1931 in Oil City, Pennsylvania and graduated from Oil City High School in 1949. After graduating in 1950 from the Hill School, Pottstown, Pa., hegentered in the United States Naval Academy, graduated in 1954, and was commissioned as Ensign, United States Navy. After graduation he served aboard the USS ISHERWOOD CDD 5203 for two and a half years as Engineering Officer. Upon graduation from Submarine School Lieutenant Master served in the USS ANGLER QSSK 240D and USS CREVALLE CSS 2915, returning to the Submarine School as an instructor in 1960-62. In 1962 he returned to sea in the USS ARCHERFISH CAGSS 3111 and in 1963 in the USS ROCK CAGSS 274D. After a two year tour as Submarine Program Officer on the staff of Commander Fourth Naval District, Lieu- tenant Commander Master was assigned as Contingency Plans Officer on the staff of Commander U. S. Naval Forces Vietnam, in Saigon, RVN. In 1968 Lieutenant Commander Master was ordered as Navigator of the cruiser SPRINGFIELD, flagship of the U. S. Second Fleet and in 1970 became Executive Officer of the U. S. Naval Station, Annapolis, Mary- land. In June of 1971 Commander Master reported to the USS DETROIT CAOE-4D as Executive Officer. Mrs. Master is the former Carolyn Mandell of Shaker Heights, Ohio. Commander and Mrs. Master have two children, Carl C9D and Kristin C61 ,
