B O 3 3 39 Ed Peterson, who was the top January graduate with a 1.03 grade average, was the first person in the history of Tech to become one of the finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Test. These tests, which were taken all across the na- tion, had a total of eighteen finalists from Des Moines. Of which, only three won scholarships. There were 1,000 students who won scholarships. Ed won a scholarship amounting to $1500 per year for the four years he will be attending Cal-Tech in California. We are all very proud of Ed. Talent at home and from abroad . Tech ' s foreign student this year was Pete Naw- rocki, age 17, from Lima, Peru. He is a 12A and takes electronics, history, English, journalism and Physical Education. While in Des Moines, he resid- ed at the home of Dr. John B. Miller. The American Field Service foreign exchange stu- dent program places 2,000 people in different coun- tries each year in the United States. There were twenty-five from Peru this year. Pete can speak three different languages, Spanish, English and Polish. His favorite sport is swimming. After his stay at Tech, his plans were to return to Peru for at least two years before returning to the United States where he would like to go to college and take electrical engineering. 1 1 x jz 5 e 3 v a 3 w 1 fig 8 £ hS 2 o- S a o i 1 q b § x cdU 3 e3 fi co T3 u cd w .2 i a c ? i Jfi KS 3 - Cd - ;2Q cd 3 o 3 - O o ca fa j | . During this last year, Tech lost one of its finest and most-loved teachers. Her name was Miss Helen Wheeler. Miss Wheeler was one of the first teach- ers here at Tech when it opened twenty- two years ago. She taught shorthand, typing, business courses, and was coordi- nator of office practice co-operative train- ing program. She helped place many Tech students on Co-op jobs. Along with all her activities that includ- ed education, she took part in many other outside interests. Some of these were the National Office Management Association, Order of Eastern Star, Kappa Delta Pi, Grace Methodist Church, and the National Education Association. The Tech student body and faculty will always remember many deeds of Miss Helen Wheeler. In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his depart- ure. You will always feel that life touch- ing yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others who knew him. Marshalltown : After a loss of 18-7 last year, Tech came back this year to beat Marshall- town 155-19. George Florence kicked a thirty- yard field goal, which was the first successful attempt by any player that Mr. Tannatt has coached. Roosevelt: Roosevelt was successful in beating Tech 27-13 on Tech ' s Homecoming week-end. One of Mr. Mueller ' s cheerleaders played a terrific pass defense as well as leading the cheers. North: Tech squeezed by North 7-0 to make a total of 79 points scored against North while they have scored 0 against Tech. Tech had two touchdowns called back along with a total of 100 yards in penalties called against them. Newton: Tech played Newton for the first time and lost 7-0.
