Commander Robert C. Hurd graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1959 commencing a career devoted primarily to crusiers and des- troyers. His first duty upon commissioning was in U.S.S. Los Angeles QCA-1351 where he served in various billets in the Operations Department. In 1961 he was assigned to U.S.S. John A. Bole QDD-7553 as weapons officer. From 1963 to 1966 he served in Subsequent Afloat Staff Billets, first as Chief Staff Officer and Operations Officer for Com- mander Destroyer Division Five Two and then as Flag Secretary and Aid to Commander Cruiser- Destroyer Flotilla Nine. Following the first sea tour Commander Hurd attended the Naval post-graduate school in Monterey, California where he earned a master of Science Degree in Management. Thistour was followed by two years as Surface Anti-Submarine Warfare Detection Systems Project Officer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel until 1969. His second sea tour, again entirelyin the Cruiser- Destroyer Force, Pacific, commenced with a tour as navigator in USS Galveston QCLG-35, followed by assignment as executive officer in USS Mullany QDD-5285 from 1970 to 1971. Commander Hurd came to USS Decatur in April 1973 from the Staff of Com- mander Destroyer Squadron Nineteen where he served as Chief Staff Officer from 1971, including a significant combat tour off the coast of North Vietnam which included participation in over 120 naval gunfire strikes against enemy targets. e ,l...' ,',' Q af, ! ff 7-5M
