HISTORY talent to this “show of shows” with participants from the whole county, Long shall we remember James Parker as Uncle Remus, A spectacular hit of the evening was a collection of old songs sung and dramatized by our Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Agee, The following senior girls had a part in this performance: Virginia Crockett, Margaret Irving, Jean Thompson, Shirley Blackwell, Patricia Brown, Pearl Bruce, Rozine Stout, Katharine Holman, Dorothy Fariss, and Dottie Brown, Jack Ingle was sent to Boys' State, where he was mayor of his city; Virginia Crockett attended Girls' State, We welcomed Bradley Carter to our class in the fall of '50; Dale Sutton, Billy Tyson, and Everett Dawson left us that year, Charles Spillman and Charles Mahan also left to join the Air Force, During the previous summer we lost Mary Kay Wealch, who moved back to Michigan; and Helen Marion, who got married, also left us, In the spring Shirley Meinhard married one of our seniors, Walter Blackwell. In the fall of '51 we returned to the halls of C,H,S, as Sophisticated Seniors, This year there were nineteen of us, Angie Glenn had withdrawn in the spring of 1951. We started the year off with a bang by electing a most ambitious and determined annual staff. This group pushed legislation through, which brought about what we hope is a betterannual than was ever published in the history of C,H,S, The group selected worked most diligently and faithfully. Another asset to this year's accomplishments was the establishment of a Library Club, which has become a most important group in our school, The Dramatic Club under the direction of Mrs, Budd, our sponsor, presented Lena Rivers starring members of the senior class in the various dramatic and comedy roles, It was a tremendous success and hailed as the best ever in Cumberland history, There were four seniors on this year's boys' basketball team, and two of our girls participated on the girls‘ team, The year's baseball team is a very good, énergetic one even after losing a number of our players in graduation last spring. We, the senior class, wish to express our deep appreciation and thanks to our teachers who have given us so much valuable help and inspiration in our high school life, We realize that any success or accomplishments that we achieve in later life : are due in part to their efforts to inspire us to make the best of our abilities, We also wish to thank our many classmates : and friends for the parts they have played in making our long struggle through high school more pleasant, The thought of leaving behind so many friends, of course, saddens us, but we realize that this is the first phase of fulfilling our life's destinies, We ask those whom we leave behind to make the most of opportunities given them and to carry on where we have left off, remembering always “Onward and Upward, HISTORIANS: Pearl Bruce Shirley Blackwell Mary Moorefield SENTOR SPOTLIGHT MOST INTELLIGENT Shirley Blackwell James Parker MOST MUSICAL Jean Thompson Franklin Adams MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Rozine Stout Jack Ingle BIGGEST FLIRT Mary Moorefield Bradley Carter

SENIOR MOST ATHLETIC Mary Moorefield Jack Keller MOST POPULAR Dottie Brown Bradley Carter BEST ALL AROUND Dorothy Fariss Paul Dansberger WITTIEST Margaret Irving Tom Brown CLASS In the fall of 1947 a group of bewildered and puzzled boys and girls entered the halls of Cumberland High School to further their education, There were thirty-two of us who had come from three separate district grade schools and for a time we were three distinct social groups: Cumberland, John Randolph and Hamilton, Gradually, however, we got over our shyness and began to make new friends. We felt very much honored to be eligible for membership in the clubs during our first year in high school, By the time we entered our second year, we felt a little more a part of the school and were more prepared for what lay ahead of us, This year many of our members proudly took parts in the various clubs and school activities, We had the misfortune of losing a number of our members, but we also had the privilege of gaining some new ones, Among those who left us the first year were: Perry Turpin, George Adams, Rachel Pickins, Charles Gordner, and Thomas Dennis, We welcomed Dottie Jean Brown to our class, We came back to school in the fall of ‘49 as Swelled- headed Sophomores, This year many of our boys played on the baseball and basketball teams, The Dramatic Club was also open to us, Two of our members starred in the colored roles of Nicodemus and Begonia in the startling hit, Ready- made Family, This year's Christmas pageant was voted the best since we had been in high school, Several of our mem- bers played various roles in the pageant, Although none of our members were in the Debate Club, we were proud that our school team got as far as the semi-finals, This year we lost four of our members--Barbara Vaughan, Pattie Robertson, George Wilson, and James Cutright--but we gained two more, Shirley Meinhard transferred from Farmville and Anne Wilson from Johnson City, Tennessee. Anne was with us only one school term because she attended summer school in the summer of '50, She became a senior the following fall; thus, she graduated with the 1951 class, As Jolly Juniors we at last felt we were nearing our goal-- graduation, This year a number of us participated on the base- ball team, We won eleven out of fourteen games, There were no basketball teams, except for the FFA team, The FFA won first in the Federation and District and placed third in the State Degree Team Tournament, Jack Ingle was the president of the FFA, This year our Debate Club topped all the previous teams, Our affirmative team consisting of Bobby Sanderson and James Parker won the State Debate Tournament in Charlottesville for class three high schools, We gave a junior-senior party with mostly seniors and sophomores attend- ing. The Glee Club gave a very beautiful and inspiring Christmas pageant, starring Rozine Stout, Other members of our class were also in this performance, It was also hostess to the Dowdy School of Music recital in the spring of that year. A variety show under the direction of Mrs, Budd, who was assisted by a committee of students, was presented, The proceeds of this entertainment was used for the improve - ment of our school grounds, Many of our members added ii
