Despite the superb coaching and hard playing, the teams record wounti up on the minus side of the ledger. This is not. by any means, to say that il was a poor season. The Braves went to Apprentice to start the season only to be defeated b the Shipbuilders with j score of 20-9. After that Chowan surprisingly grabbed a victory from Baltimore. The Baltimore Red Devils won the game -V. -l but used ineligible players giving us the victory by forfeit. With this fortunate bit of luck the Braves were looking for a real victory. The Braves returned unhappy, but a devoted football team. Ferrum was the next opposing team to come to Chowan. Ferrum ranked first among the nation ' s junior college football powers but Chowan Braves gave them a scare with a fighting score. Chowan defeated the Panthers in statistics but lost to a tally of 45-27. With the shock of defeat the Braves played Lees-McRae for Homecoming. The field was slick with mud which slowed the Braves down giving Lees-McRae the victory with a heartbreaking score of 27-0. ' Iti- arc opposing Icanis during practice but they arc a team during a Basketball . . a wrap-up Chowan College ' s basketball program for 1968-69 introduced one of the best squads of recent years and came through with a record matching any in the school ' s round-ball his- tory. The team that engineered the 16-9 won- lost ledger relied heavily on a number of first year men held together by a small, but ener- getic band of sophomores and by Louis Fiore and Harry Gray. The squad indicated their fine potential during a pre-season scrimmage with a powerful Naval Amphibious Force do- minated by senior college stars from every re. gion of the country. Handling the powerful Gators ' offense and defense amazingly well, the Braves gave the all-Navy contenders all they could ask for until late in the second half. At that piont. the Braves coach benched all those he knew he would have to play vital roles in the up-coming Mt. Olive Invitational Tourney starting the next evening. Through the early part of the schedule Cho- wan tried a number of different playing com- binations which were to no avail. They had the players, but couldn ' t jell together until the mid-point of the season in a game with Louisburg. The Braves, down by 15 at half- time, fought back to within a point on two occasions, but the struggle was not quite enough and the Hurricanes won 95-91. But the Braves had found their combination, and went on to victory in every regular season contest through the remainder to their sche- dule, including wins over tall and proud Wil- liam and Mary and East Carolina Frosh quints and a big one at Ferrum, the first over a Panther five in five years and breaking a 51 game home victory skein. Chowan went on to oust College of the Albermarle in the con- ference tournament opening night. In the semi-finals however, the Braves were dumped by Ferrum 10.3-96. Chowan had started the game as though they were determined to re- present the school and conference at the Re- gion 10 tourney a week later. The Braves forg- ed a small break in high gear and William Brown man-handling the Panther defense, spurted to a commanding 13 point lead. The overflow crowd comprised mostly of loyal Chowan students and followers roared approval at the dominance of the Braves. But the Braves ran into difficulty the rest of that half and the Panthers gnawed away at the margin until only a four point difference sep. arated the teams at halftime. A couple bad breaks cost them ball possession and the Pan- thers took advantage of the opportunities to pull safely out of reach. The defeat ended a very successful season, and with most of those who figured promi- nently in the success, coming back for an en- core next year, the Braves and their fans have plenty to look forward to. Delta Psi Omega is a national dramatic honorary fraternity, founded in 1929. Today there are over two hundied chapters in the junior colleges of America — nine in the State of North Carolina. One of the main objectives of Delta Psi Omega is to give students adequate recognition for their work in promoting college theatre. Each member must meet certain requirments to gain admission to Delta Psi Omega, and must also maintain these standards through- out his two years al Chowan. 108 THE CHOWAN PLAYERS Students who are interesteil in any form of dramatics, ranging from the building of scenery to the interpretation of a role, are known as The Chowan Players. Their director, Mrs. Ldilh Larson, tries to (1) provide a dramatic training ground for the students, and to (2) produce various styles and periods of dramatic activities over their two year period at Chowan College. For the 1968-69 season Life With Father was entered in the American College Theatre Festival which was held in Greensboro, N. C, one of the centers for Region X. Through the efforts of the Chowan Players, the back stage area has been painted and enlarged to include dressing rooms, a make-up room, and storage space for costumes, furniture and props. The new facility should stimulate interest which will be reflected in the years to come. In 1909. the Braves Cindermen are led h distance man Hugh Wade, Jumper and sprinter Ronald Joyner, supported by a cast of sixteen other track hopefuls to comprise the Braves team. In addition to Wade, the Braves distance runners have been George Skinner, and Martin Aderhold. The field events have been led b Ronald Jovnei. J, din Thornton and others. Wade was our number one man on the Cross Country Harriers ' and has been working toward the national meet in Kansas. Richard Binder, who nearly qualified for the national meet last year, and Ernest Overbe make up the best hurtling team Chowan has had. Martin Aderhold was a real discovery and 1909 presents his first ventur,- in track but he displayed a great deal of determination and dcMre lo become an outstanding distance runner. Steve Shaw. who has shown promise as the top middle distance runner, helped the Braves a great deal in the 440 and mile relav.
