THERE ARE THREE MAIN DIVISIONS OF METAL WORKING AS A VOCATIONAL FIELD, NAMELY, GENERAL MACHINE SHOP, ARC AND OXY-ACETYLENE WELDING, AND SHEET METAL WORK. THE PALACE PROVIDES FIVE MACHINE SHOPS, TO WELDING SHOPS, AND TWO SHEET METAL SHOPS ALL MODERNLY EQUIPPED. ALL THREE SHOPS ARE PRESENTED IN THE FIRST FOUR EXPLORATORY SEMESTERS. THE GENERAL OBIECTIVES IN METAL WORKING ENCOMPASS PRESENTATION OF THE NUMEROUS INTERESTING AND USEFUL FACTS ABOUT MODERN INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZA- TION METHODS, MACHINES, AND MATERIALS: TEACHING THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION AS APPLIED TO MODERN SHOP METHODS AND THE NECESSARY HAND SKILLS FOR SUCCESSFUL ENTRANCE INTO INDUSTRY AS AN APPRENTICE: TEACHING THOSE HABITS WHICH DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION OF QUALITY AND GOOD WORKMANSHIP: AND EQUIPPING THE STUDENT MORE ADEQUATELY FOR HIS PART IN COMMUNITY WELFARE AS A SKILLED WORK- MAN AND A GOOD CITIZEN. SPECIFICALLY, THE AIMS ARE: TO GIVE INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE IN THE USE OF COMMON HAND TOOLS AND MACHINE METAL WORKING TOOLS: TO PROVIDE THE AT- MOSPHERE OF MACHINE SHOP WORK: TO DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION OF HIGH DEGREE AC- CURACY AS REQUIRED IN MACHINE SHOP PRACTICE: AND TO INSTILL A FEELING OF RE- SPONSIBILITY TOWARD OTHERS WHILE TRAINING THE STUDENT IN HABITS OF HYGIENE AND SAFETY. VENTILATING SYSTEMS, AUTOMOBILES, CORNICE AND SKYLIGHTS, ADVERTISING SIGNS, BENCHES AND LOCKERS, NAME ONLY A FEW OF THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THE VAST SHEET METAL INDUSTRY. BOTH GAS AND ARC WELDING DOVETAIL INTO ALL OF THE METAL WORKING INDUSTRY AND THERE IS QUITE NATURALLY AN OVERLAP INTO BOTH THE AUTO- MOTIVE AND THE AERONAUTICS DEPARTMENTS.
