SCAOOK C95 tZ?0I I'l Soon after Spartanburg County was redivided in- to seven school districts, plans were begun for a District 1 High School to replace the then existing high schools, Campobello, Gramling, Holly Springs, Inman, and New Prospect. The superintendent, Mr. T. E. Mabry, and his board of able trustees accepted a twenty-two-acre tract of land donated by Inman Mills, of which the late Mr. James Alfred Chapman was founder. Construction on the building was started the sum- mer of 1953 by the T. C. Brittain Construction Co. of Decatur, Georgia, and completed at a cost of ap- proximately S500,000 in time for the opening of the 1954-1955 school session. Mr. Harold Woodward and associates were architects. The plant faces the Asheville Highway. The front consists of the administration wing, a classroom wing and library, and a spacious lobby. A modern gym- torium with six exits is centrally located. A wide hall connects the front of the building with the rear wing, housing the commercial department, science labora- tory, home economics department, cafeteria, band room, and one other class room. Rest rooms and a teachers' lounge are conveniently located in each wing. Two annexes with covered walkways house the agricultural department, projection room, one class room, shop, and canteen. Paved walks surround the building, and between the wings there is a court with a refreshing fountain. Parking space is provided in front of and behind the building. Chapman High School was formally dedicated to the memory of the late James Alfred Chapman and in honor of his family on December 13, 1954. Mr. Chapman's three children, James A. Chapman, Rob- ert H. Chapman, and Mrs. Laura Chapman Jackson, were platform guests. Other relatives sat in a group in the audience. Music for the dedication ceremony was furnished by the high school glee club under the direction of Mr. James McMakin. Taking part on the program were Mr. Mabry, Mr. John C. Bell, and Mr. T. D. Stilwell. Mr. Stilwell performed the formal dedication. Mrs. Paul Alverson sang Bless This House.
