The first goal of the department is to give its students a good command of the language because this is essential for competence in any vocation. The skills and habits learned in this course will be of great value throughout life. The second aim in the teaching of English concerns personal development and happiness apart from the job. Through the study of literature, the student gains an understanding and ap- preciation of life itself. The department believes this is essential to the educa- tion of a well-rounded person. To ac- complish this, it is necessary to acquire proficiency in the skills of reading and to develop an appreciation for good lit- erature.
